Your cat has been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes occurs in cats when there is decreased or no production of insulin by the pancreas. Predisposing causes of this disease include obesity, pancreatic injury or disease, and use of certain pharmaceuticals. Insulin is critical to the body to allow the cell to use sugar (glucose) for energy.
Acute renal failure occurs when an insult immediately damages the kidneys, such as a toxin or an infection. Chronic renal failure is insidious since the cat may have kidneys that have been affected by a disease process for quite a long time before clinical signs become apparent. Often renal compromise can be detected on routine blood chemistry performed while the cat is still healthy. The kidneys are what we call a redundant organ. Any animal can live normally with only one kidney so long as it remains healthy.
Just as obesity among adults and children in the United States has become a growing concern, obesity in our feline friends is dramatically on the rise. According to the Center for Disease Control, 33% of American males and 35% of American females are significantly overweight or obese. Recent veterinary studies show that 40 - 50% of our cats as similarly overweight or obese. Unlike overweight people, where lifestyle plays a major role, in the cat, obesity is an endocrine disorder triggered by commercial diets.
Treatment is a catch-up game to get problems under control when there may already be permanent damage to the oral cavity or internal organs. Cats with routine dental care typically live longer and healthier lives. Cats with dental disease constantly release bacteria from their mouth into their bloodstream i.e.

Was referred here by a family member, let me just say this, I will not be adopting kittens from these people. When I walked in, nobody greeted me and once I was acknowledged, they were very rude. I had no vet reference for them to check so the dr had to approve the adoption. However, the dr wasn't in and I wasn't notified that until I had waited an additional 20-30 mins. I took my business elsewhere (Petsmart). The experience was great and I adopted 3 kittens. My three kittens will not be going to this clinic either!

No other Animal Hospital was able to successfully treat our cat, as he was so sick he didn't have much of a chance left. Dr. Lori not only saved our little tuxxy, but also restored my trust in veterinarians. Thank yall so much.

Dr. Williams caught and properly diagnosed what both an ER vet and my primary care vet missed on the X-rays they had taken for an issue with my kitty's knee. This clinic was able to get me scheduled for surgery in the same week that I called (which is AMAZING and typically unheard of!) - the referral vet I originally spoke with had stated they were scheduling out to June. Dr. Williams thoroughly explained the issue with my cat and gave me multiple recommendations for treatment. So impressed by and thankful for this clinic and Dr. Williams!

Dr. Williams saved my cats life last week! They got her in the same day I called and got her into surgery! Thank you Dr. Williams and Shannon! You both put me at ease and helped save my baby girl. Can't recommend this office enough.

My family recently adopted 2 kittens from Sound Cat & they are absolutely wonderful! The building/house is adorable, the staff is so helpful & personable & they provide exceptional care. I can't believe a place like this exists, but I am SO glad that it does! Even down to the sketchy, but beautiful, white cat that owns the place. I wish I could give them !

I recently took my 17 year old cat here for extreme dental surgery. Dr. Rockwell and her assistants were the absolute, most caring individuals I believe I've ever met. I hate to hear some had a bad experience here because mine has been a life saver. This doctor has truly saved my cats life and given me back mine! Two times I was told at Country Vet they were unable to see inside her mouth.

I waisted money and my cat suffered longer. These appointments were curbside only, I was not allowed to go in. Best thing they did was suggest I look into a vet that could monitor her more closely during Dental Surgery due to her age. I am extremely thankful I did because it took no time for Dr. Rockwell to see in her mouth. I was allowed into this appointment, but feel she still would have had success even if I wasn't.

I originally called 3 places and was so impressed with Shannon's knowledge, patience, and transparency on the phone that I knew it was the right spot! Dr. Rockwell is so amazing that she made sure I had her email before I left the day of surgery. She even had the office call to check on my cat after surgery. This staff is dedicated to the health and wellness of their clients! I am forever thankful!

Very friendly, not a long wait and sociable cats are in the waiting area too! Dr Gervais has been very thorough and helpful in answering any questions I've had. Plus she diagnosed my kitten correctly!

I had been taking my cat to The Sound Cat for about a year. The front desk staff were never particularly friendly. I called on a Monday to get my cat, who was an established patient there, in because she was very sick. I was told the soonest they could see her would be the following Wednesday (a week and a half later) because they were "down a doctor" (that's a VERY common excuse at The Sound Cat, by the way).

To have to wait that long for an established patient to be seen is unacceptable. Fortunately, I was able to get her into another vet much sooner (and as a new patient!). It's a good thing I did, too, because her health problem was very urgent, and there's not telling what state she might have been in had I waited a week and a half. When I emailed The Sound Cat that I would no longer be using their practice and to cancel all upcoming appointments and mail reminders, I received the snarkiest, most sarcastic, and most unprofessional response that "of course bad things happen when I'm on my first vacation in ten years and I will just have to fire whoever was responsible." Do NOT take your cat here as they are unable to even maintain their current established patients, and they are rude and unprofessional beyond belief.

Sound Cat is hands down the best vet for your cat in all of Pender and New Hanover county! I came in with an emergency, and Dr. Williams was quick to clear her schedule and go into surgery with my little guy right away. She's the reason why my cat is walking around today! They truly understand the love some of us have for our cats and make sure the cats are comfortable, happy and healthy! Love love love Sound Cat! You guys are AMAZING!

Treated 2 cats of mine. I did NOT have a UTI as indicated, and DID NOT have high blood pressure......got 2nd and 3rd opinions and they knew about Williams' history. She is all about finding things that aren't there or benign, not needing meds or further worry.
Also, one cat was dying yet she wanted to keep him ...other vet knew he was dying too. Absurd to keep a dying cat going to have a huge bill.

Dr. Williams and her staff are so wonderful to our cats AND us. The care they provide can be pricey, but it is because they treat the cats like human patients (who can't talk) to help determine what is wrong with them using tools like ultrasound and x-ray when needed. However, we have never had them 'surprise us' with costly procedures, but instead have always communicated the benefits and costs first. We travel over an hour to the Sound Cat because we feel like our cats get the best care there!

There are so many good vet places to go to that are clean and respect the client and animal, nothing further to say.
