A: Our traditional recommendation was when your pet was 30 lb in weight or 6 month of age, whichever comes first. However, mounting evidence suggests health benefits by waiting until your dog achieves skeletal and reproductive maturity at 1 year or later. A: Spaying/neutering will not make a dog or cat fat as long as their calorie intake matches their physical activity level.

Went to this Vet after another local vet was unable and too incompetent to trim my dogs' nails (one of my dogs is fearful of vets). We ended up here, as we were told by phone that they could handle my dog. That was an understatement. Dr. Carr was so gentle, kind, calming, and the staff had him so calm and content and petted, that my dog's nails were trimmed, and he was examined without any stress to any of us.

I was put at ease, as much as my dog was, and Dr. Carr was tremendous. So were the vet's assistants. competent, calming and professional, and loving. I was so impressed, had Dr. Carr examine and nail trim all my dogs, and he subsequently found things in my old dog that had gone unnoticed by previous vets. Can't thank Dr. Carr enough. He has thoroughly treated my dogs with pure excellence and professionalism.

Highly recommend to all, especially those dogs fearful of vets. Update~ have different trio of dogs now, and LOVE this place and Dr. Odds and Dr. O'Connor. so thorough, take their time with you explaining things in depth, good doctoring, very caring, professional and warm. Excellent care with my mutt-ly trio. The techs are excellent as well! Very happy here.

We had an emergency with our new puppy, they were able to get us in, even though there were no appointments! The Vet took care of "Wick" our puppy, and was kind, knowledgeable and made what was potentially scary, NOT! The Vet instantly put my wife and I at ease, and took care of the problem! Oh, did I mention, our regular vet couldn't get us in. We are switching practices and our 2 other dogs will now be patients of High Desert. Thanks again for getting us in within an hour and taking such great care of Wick!

It has been three years now since my dog died of cancer. Maybe I'm finally ready to share what Tony Oddo did to us. Apologies for not sharing sooner. I fear I could have prevented harm to others had I spoken up. Better late than never. Tony Oddo should not be permitted to provide medical care to any living creature. I will only tell my most painful story. I'll leave out second-hand stories from family and friends of three other dogs who Tony had an even more active role in murdering.

I will leave out my cat's infection after a pointless biopsy, or when Dr. Barkhurst failed to identify my dogs bad knees (I think they took x-rays of her hips instead), sending us off with a shrug and a $200 bill to pay. I brought my four-year-old Rottweiler in to see Tony Oddo. Asoka was her name. Asoka received her CGC certification before the age of one and had almost finished learning all the general requirements outlined for service dogs.

She was gentle and had better manners than most humans I know. Asoka had lost her normally insatiable appetite. She hadn't been eating. I could see her bones and a bulge on her side as big as a soccer ball. Tony Oddo gave her a check up and told me she is fine. Seriously, this is what he said. "She's fine." "It's a phase." "Everything seems normal." I made the mistake of telling him I looked up her symptoms online.

This angered him, as (in his mind) pet owners aren't supposed to try to be vets. I recall sitting on the floor in their back room with Asoka and crying. I pleaded with him to feel her side. He wouldn't so much as bend down. He just kept telling me she was fine. We left that day and life went on as usual for about a month. She still wouldn't eat.

She was emaciated and the bulge had grown even more. I scheduled an emergency visit at UC Davis. We drove eight hours to see a real veterinarian. The real veterinarian diagnosed Asoka's cancer. Tumors (primarily three large ones) had taken over much of her organs. The cancer had spread beyond the point of possible surgery. I will never forget the way the veterinarian looked at me, disgusted by what she viewed as my negligence.

I will never forget how I felt when she asked "How could you let it get this bad?." Asoka died three months later. She would have died with or without Tony Oddo's extreme negligence. I might have had much more time with her though. I have often wondered. did Tony Oddo actually fail to identify a very clear, very substantial abnormality? Or was this something else? Did he (without consent) decide to choose our fate for us?

Maybe he thought he should save us what amounted to over $10,000 in vet bills. Several years earlier Tony Oddo offered us "the cheapest thing to do" when Asoka had what's called cherry eye. He either didn't know or didn't tell us the procedure he uses had a high likelihood of causing dry eye (permanent discomfort, eye drops required four times per day for the rest of the dogs life) or that most vets had stopped doing this surgery a decade ago in favor of a much better option.) Could be possibly be once again going with "the cheapest option"? Was he unaware that surgical treatment would have been possible at that point, but not if we waited and the tumors got larger? So what is my recommendation for High Desert Veterinary? I strongly recommend they be shut down and that Tony Oddo lose his license to practice.

Took my cat in with a broken leg. Vet only had my kitty walk around and did NOT X-ray. Then I had to pay 5000 dollars for the leg to be amputated because the vet sent my cat home, with a broken leg, for a week. This guy is going to lose his license. Don't take your animals here. They don't do the basics, like an X-ray for a broken leg. Then when I talked to the vet, he was incredulous and called my wife and me a liar. The 5000 dollar emergency amputation was no lie. I've got the receipts. Don't go here.

Wonderful Vets and staff at the High Desert Vet. We have been using them for our dog for the past 8 years and always felt very confident and comfortable with them. They never did unnecessary testing yet always made sure we did everything that was needed. Our dog recently passed away and I was grateful to have such trustworthy vets during this tough time.

Just as our trusted vet of many years was retiring, my hiking companion, a six year old Catahoula mix, spun a 180 turn and ripped his CCL. Since we were "vetless", my son recommended Dr. Oddo, as he has used this clinic for years. Also, his dog had experienced a similar injury and he was extremely happy with the outcome of the surgery. I am so glad for his recommendation.

We went ahead with the necessary surgery, and are very pleased with the results. Unfortunately, Apache tore the ligament on his other hind leg just as the first one was almost healed, but Dr. Oddo repaired that one, too. My buddy is now back hiking with me again, and running and playing with his dog pals. Thanks, Tony, and all of your staff, for the great care you gave my dog. I know you were kind to him, because, in spite of the inevitable pain that comes surgery and recovery, he shows no hesitation at returning to your clinic for checkups.

I brought my 3 month old MinPin in for her last round of puppy shots and a fecal sample. All the girls were soo friendly and caring. I also LOVE the fact that Dr. O'Conner's is very aware of what is necessary for vaccinations depending on the area. Will be taking the little one there again for sure.

We have 3 older Mastiffs and 2 cats. We moved to Bend 7 months ago and have been to both Dr. Barkhurst ( who doesn't explain very well) and Dr. Oddo ( who over explains everything). We like knowing all details of our pets care so we chose Dr. Otto. Our dogs have bone and arthritis problems and we had all previous blood tests and records transferred from out of state. Dr. Oddo recommended a few changes and we followed his recommendations.

Our female has severe arthritis and has been on 3- 12 tablets of Tramadol per day as prescribed by our previous vet as needed for pain. I called at 9:20 a.m and left a detailed message requesting a refill as she has been waking up at night crying and chewing on her bed (in pain). I explained the situation and that we would like maybe a day or two worth until we could get a Rx refill.

My husband followed up early that afternoon and he was told the Dr. would review charts later that afternoon. We then had to call again the next morning and go another pain filled night. We were told Dr. Otto is 'out of town at a remote location' and Dr Barkhurst refused to refill or extend the prescription. Also the receptionist told us we were 'overdosing her' because we recently started giving her 4 tablets twice a day instead of three because her pain and limping flared up.

So I guess we were just supposed to 'wait until he returned next week' and let our dog suffer? We will no longer be using High Desert. No empathy for her pain and not solution oriented.

Some of our experiences with High Desert Veterinary have been good, while others have been very disappointing. Our appointments with Dr. Oddo have been very good, and we've been impressed with his knowledge and care for our dogs. On the other hand, Dr. Carr hasn't impressed us. His professionalism and respect for clients is horrible. We spent 20 minutes past our scheduled appointment time, standing, while waiting for him to complete a phone call that we could overhear.

The Vet Tech went in twice to indicate he had clients waiting, and whispered a sorry to us when he did come out. His apology upon coming out was less than sincere. Unfortunately, we won't be recommending this veterinarian to friends and family.

I've been taking my dogs to High Desert for the past 4 years. Dr. Tony has always been very wonderful to work with. We recently just had to put one of our dogs down and Dr. Carr was just as wonderful and understanding during such a terrible time for us. The staff at High Desert is always so friendly and caring. I trust them completely with my fur babies!

Had a pleasant initial appointment and wanted this to be the vet for our three furry family members. Having missed an appointment I was called to see if I would be making it, I live just a few minutes away and would have made the appointment but I was told not to worry it was not a big deal at all. Then I was billed $56.quite a contradiction. Their finance manager was so difficult to work with that we will not be returning with our pets. She took much longer than promised to return our call, our time is just as valuable as yours. Sad that one person in their office can ruin it for their whole clinic.

Dr. Tony Oddo and his staff at High Desert are the best you'll ever find. Their professionalism and knowledge is surpassed only by their compassion for and love of animals. When I had to say goodbye to one of my beloved cats, Dr. Oddo did everything he could to make it a peaceful transition and to make me feel that letting go of my dear companion was an act of love. I will be forever grateful to him for that.

Mis-diagnosed a cancerous tumor on my cat. Now he's dead. Wish he at least said sorry.
