The section of this website formerly called 'News and Essays' will now become the 'VTF Farriery Blog' that will be updated frequently with new information. The blog will concentrate on credible information relevant to basic farriery based on clinical papers, clinician methodology, case reports, practice tips, etc. Many posts will reflect on some of the more controversial and highly debated topics in farriery. Veterinarians and farriers are urged to participate in the Blog and are welcome to submit appropriate information on any aspect of farriery based on one's clinical work and or experience.
Services
There is no structure on the horse that is more susceptible to injury, disease or "wear and tear" than the equine foot. Proper, timely hoof care can often make the difference between a sound performance horse and one with chronic lameness. Horses will not perform to their optimum potential without good structures and function of their feet.
Consultations with the attending veterinarian and or farrier along with the client / trainer is the preferred method for treating referral cases. The interaction with the attending veterinarian / farrier allows for evaluation, discussion and implementing what is considered to be the appropriate farriery for a given horse.
Second opinions are provided for prepurchase examinations and insurance claims for the underwriter. It is well documented that 70% of forelimb lameness is localized to the foot or the digit above. The clinical / physical examination and the forefoot radiographs are two of the most important aspects of the prepurchase examination.
