Located in Mission Viejo, California we are a state of the art veterinary hospital serving Family Members, just like yours, all over Orange County. We offer Doctor's appointments, in house laboratory facilities, surgery, dentistry, internal medicine, dermatology and grooming. We even have a non-anesthetic dental technician and ultrasonographer come in to our pet hospital on regular basis. This extra step not only provides additional comfort during what can be a frighting time but is an extra level of protection for your pet.
Services
Our Veterinary Surgery Suite here in South Orange County has a Positive Air Flow System that enables us to maintain a more sterile environment for the surgical care of your pets. All pets receive a pre-anesthetic relaxant to make it less stressful for them. Isoflurane is the only gas anesthesia we use because of its excellent safety record.
The staff of Family Member Veterinary Hospital are hired for their professionalism, compassion and love of animals. We are pleased to introduce each of them to you here briefly but hope you will come in to meet each of us in person. Dr. Doug Glover is a 1985 graduate of Kansas State University. He has been providing care for small animals in California since 1987 and opened "Family Member" in 1997.
Reply times may vary, but we try to check our email several times a day so we should get back to you within 24 hours. I have been bringing my pets to Dr. Doug Glover, Family Member Veterinary Hospital, for 8 years. The last 2 years I have driven from Long Beach to continue to have him care for my pets.
Because Healthy Pets always have a smile for you, we thought it would be fun to feature a few of them. There is nothing like a smile from a pet to warm your heart. Many of them were while they were visiting with us. We welcome any submissions by our clients to be included here. Send them to drglover@familymember.com.

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Glover for well over 10 years. The new vet, Dr. Angelo has exactly the same thoughts and love for pets. And even though Dr. Glover has since retired and only working a couple days a week. I have found absolute faith in Dr. Angelo. Would never ever take my dogs to anyone else. They truly are top notch and they absolutely care even over money. That’s never been an issue. I absolutely love both of them!

I can't say enough about how amazing Dr. Glover and everyone is at Family Member Veterinary Hospital! Dr. Glover took care of our two Italian Greyhounds, Gus & Chloe for their whole life! (16 years) and even helped us navigate canine cancer with the upmost care. He really cares for his patients and their humans too. We just adopted a Russian Blue kitten and Finch went for his first visit to Dr. Glover yesterday. Finch has been having stomach issues and Dr. Glover knew exactly what needed to be done! We love our fur babies and wouldn't trust anyone else!

I wish I didn't feel compelled to write this negative review because I genuinely liked the staff and overall work from this office. However, I have a 12-year-old Pomeranian who has not been able to get dental work done due to other medical issues. I had just moved to the area and Family Member Vet was the closest to my house, so I went to them. They are PRICEY!
But they told us they were excellent with senior dogs, so I saved up to take my dog there. 3 weeks prior to the teeth cleaning, I paid $600 for just about every type of test to make sure my dog was able to be put under safely and get his wellness exam and shots. At no point did they say they expected any major work to be done during the cleaning and they quoted the cleaning at $600.
At the drop off for his cleaning the quote was now $700 and I was required to sign a document which has a section where you must initial one of two options. One authorizes procedures to a certain dollar amount without consent from the owner, the other (which I initialed) states "Please do not do any additional medical procedures without my approval." So, imagine my horror when I got the call that the $700.00 teeth cleaning ended up being $1,700, after they extracted 13 teeth without contacting me first to obtain my authorization as I thought was made clear from the box I initialed!
They more than doubled my bill, pulled half of my dog's remaining teeth and did not consider due to the excessive number of extractions that getting my consent might be warranted. On the phone, Dr. Glover informed me that underneath the section I initialed (which should allow you to dictate your pet's care) there is a conflicting provision which nullifies the section you initialed which states that they have the right to extract as many teeth as they deem necessary, they will not contact the owner, you will be notified after and you must pay for the work!
I would have never had them do the teeth cleaning if they told me how much work needed to be done and given me a realistic quote during the screening 3 weeks prior. I would have found a vet I could afford. In his 12 years, teeth have been removed by other vets and they all called me to get approval before extracting. I even called the 5 vets near their offices (as now I'm looking for a new vet) and every single one said they never do extractions without first obtaining consent from the owner.
I was in such shock that all I could do was cry. I apparently was crying enough over the phone for them to give me a "multiple extraction" discount of $200, but my bill was still more than double what I expected and the payment plan they offered had 10.9% APR (are you joking?). When I went to pick up my dog I was still in shock, I just paid and took my dog.
Two days later, when I finally felt I could talk to them without getting upset, I was told the person I was talking to wasn't authorized to talk to me and she was hanging up and would notify the office manager. Instead of the office manager calling me back, she emailed me my dog's records and told me "we feel it is best to part ways." Very sad and very poor business practices.

I truly grateful for Dr. Glover and his team. I called 5 different vets in the area and everyone was booked. The reception was sweet and placed me on hold to make sure they could take us. We were able to confirm appointment. It was a smooth 10 minute drive, as soon as I got there I was in the room. Dr Glover was thorough, he made sure I knew exactly was he was doing to my pup. The bills was very reasonable in price with what they were doing. I'm switching my dogs over to this vet.

Dr. Glover is so caring and thorough. He was highly recommended by a friend who knew I was desperate for a second opinion about my dog's heart murmur and elevated liver enzymes. He spent a lot of time with me and my husband and talked about all possibilities of what could be going on. I just appreciate how quickly they got us in and understanding how worried we are. I also was pleasantly surprised that he charges less than my other vet.

As our two dogs and cat got older, it was harder for us to make a 12-15 minute car trip to our vet, so we looked for a vet closer to home. We happened to see a sign announcing a "new vet" in strip mall just about 2 minutes from us. I noticed the name "Family Member..." and looked them up here and other online sites. The reviews were good, so we made the switch and visited Dr. Glover.
What a WONDERFUL vet he has turned out to be for OUR family. A week ago, we had to take our beloved 13 year-old Corgi, Bindi Sue, to Dr. Glover because she was failing dramatically over past few days. He took one look at her and knew how bad it was and really didn't need to say anything. We agreed that her time had come and we stayed with her through the end. Dr. Glover wrote us the most touching message in a card today.
They made a donation in Bindi's name to the Pet Tribute Fund at Kansas State University - just so kind. His whole team is simply awesome. Thank you, Dr. Doug Glover....from Shannon & Gary Ingram, Dora (dog) & Oscar (cat)

Cannot say enough great things about Dr. Glover, his facilities, and staff.
Dr. Glover has been our vet for 20+ years. We have tried several other vets in the past, but we did not find any vet that compares to Dr. Glover. Over the 20 years, he has treated our three large dogs and two cats. One dog had cancer and required a leg amputation. Our current dog has epilepsy and requires medications.
We have also used his boarding and pet washing services. His staff has even come to our home, during one of our dog's illness. With his diagnoses, Dr. Glover gave us options and consequences so we could make informed decisions.

Family Member is an honest, no frills, affordable vet with caring and friendly staff. I really like how accommodating they are with my busy schedule. I bring my 13 yr old dog and my cat to Dr. Glover. My dog had a tumor removed by Dr. Glover and he handled it with care and professionalism. I brought my cat in a couple times due to constant itching and was referred to a vet dermatologist for food and allergy testing which was just what he needed.
I also stop in here every few weeks to buy Royal Canin (cat food) at a reasonable price.
Vet care can be an unexpected expense. Be smart and buy prescriptions at Costco, Walmart, Allivet, etc. Buy your ear cleaner on Amazon!
Vets cost money but I've tried several other vets in the area over my many years in RSM and I've found Family Member to be most affordable, trustworthy and caring. I'll keep coming back!!

I feel completely robbed after my first visit here. I called ahead and asked if they do allergy/food intolerance testing and they said yes so I mad an appointment. I cam in expecting to just get the test done like I asked. I wanted a baseline for what foods I should and should not be feeding my recently adopted dog. They told me "I don't want you to get expensive tests you don't need" but they ended up charging me just as much for a few meds.
One probiotic they sold me was almost double the pet store price. What a ripoff! On top of this, they took my dog in the back and gave him an injection without telling me what it was or even telling me the cost. I will definitely not be returning.

I cannot even begin to sing enough praises for this practice. I should have reviewed a long time ago! I don't know where to begin. I will first start by saying that I had to bring a friends dog who was vomiting uncontrollably while I was watching her. It was on New Year's eve and not only did he stay to see me but gave me his home phone number. I did have a couple questions and I literally called his house on New Year's eve at 8 o'clock at night spoke to his wife who is also an amazing person.
He got on the phone right away and walked me through what I needed to know. I bring my dogs to them as well. I can also cannot count the amount of people I have sent his way. Everyone there truly cares about what they're doing. The energy is upbeat and even the customers are friendly! Obviously I am not the only one who feels this way as he has glowing recommendations. Thank you Dr. Glover for truly caring about the animals you treat.

We've been coming here since our Coton de Tulear, Lilly, was a puppy. She's certainly had her share of health issues and Dr. Glover has always been there to see her through the worst. While Family Member may be a little pricier than others, the one thing we could never fault was the care given to our dog. From the moment we walk in the door at our appointed time, the staff is incredibly caring and does everything possible to make our dog comfortable.
Her teeth were in deep need of attention a couple months ago. We shopped around with a few other vets, based on our groomer's recommendation. We checked them out and decided to stick with Dr. Glover, even though he cost a little more. After having 6 teeth pulled (!), she's doing great. Again, the care they gave our dog was fantastic. I would recommend Family Member to anyone.

Our babies, Augustus and Chloe (both 15 years old) Italian Greyhounds, have been patients of Dr. Glover's their entire life. We even moved to another city (20 miles away) and would drive them to Family Member Veterinary Hospital for their visits. Let me start by saying that I have never met another vet and staff that treated our pets like they are our children. Dr. Glover is not only caring and loving towards our pets, he is also progressive and pro-active when needed. He is Highly educated in his field and knows his stuff.
He has been treating our boy, Augustus specifically, since July for lymphoma and as difficult as it has been, we know that Dr. Glover is caring for Augustus as if he was his own. The staff that work for Dr. Glover, Angelia and Jessica and all the assistants treat us and our dogs with respect and care. I have had other pets and other vets in the past, and Family Member Veterinary is not any more expensive than any other vet in the OC area.
They are upfront and informative when speaking to us regarding treatments and procedures and the costs involved. Dr. Glover suggests what needs to be done and then together we decide what is best for our dogs.
Dr. Glover takes the time to call us to check in on our dogs when they have visited him for any reason. Just another nicety of the office. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Glover and Family Member Veterinary Hospital to anyone that loves their pets and wants the best care out there for them!

Seriously the best veterinarian I've ever been to! My toy Chihuahua had $3000 of surgery to her tiny paw and she would not let anyone cut her nails! The vet who performed the surgery would put her out to cut her nails. But not here, they were able to cut her nails in just a few short minutes and for $20. They also took great care of my other dog who had a scratch on her Eye.

I had occasion to take my dog into Family Member Veterinary Hospital on December 8th for emergency treatment. From the moment I entered, I felt that the staff, beginning with Angela, at the reception desk, really cared. She checked us in quickly and efficiently while having me write a detailed description of my observations with respect to my dog's problem(s).
As I had to continue on to work, she told me that the Vet would call me as soon as she had a chance to examine my dog. Shortly after arriving at work, I received a call from Dr. Shumka. Dr. Shumka was standing in for Dr. Glover, the regular Vet. I have to say, I'm 58 years old and have had pets my entire life. I've been to a great many Vets over the years but this was truly a unique experience.
In talking with Dr. Shumka, I felt as though she'd known my dog for his entire life. She was exceptionally kind, soft spoken and conveyed an an honest, heartfelt concern for both myself and her patient. She was extremely informative and suggested a variety of options with respect to what she felt would benefit my dog and never pressured or tried to sell me on anything.
In fact, she provided me with an objective evaluation of my dog's condition and allowed me to elect what procedures would or would not be performed. I spoke with Dr. Shumka on several occasions throughout the day and on each occasion felt her compassion and concern for both my dog and I. Later when I came in to pick up my dog, she took me in the back and showed me a series of x-ray images, explaining what she believed was going on.
Her discussion with me, while frank and informative was done in a very caring and sensitive manner. Most impressive, however, was her honesty and humility when she told me that she wasn't certain what she'd seen in one area of the x-ray. She told me what she thought the image was showing but suggested that she would like to have the images evaluated further by a Radiologist.
Based upon my experience with Dr. Shumka on this occasion and my prior experience with Dr. Glover, I feel that the quality of care offered at Family Member Veterinary Hospital is second to none.
I deeply appreciate the sensitivity afforded me during my visit and the manner in which my dog was cared for. Although this was an emotionally charged situation for me and ultimately $$$$ expensive, I felt like I was treated with fairness and courtesy at all times. In closing, I highly recommend Family Member Veterinary Hospital for the superb quality of their staff, the standard of care afforded their patients and their excellent integerity.
