Services
Niles Animal Hospital has a long and distinguished history, being recognized as one of the foremost veterinary practices in the nation. The hospital was established by Dr. T. J. Lafeber, Jr. who was considered one of the world's leading authorities on pet bird care and medicine. After Dr. Lafeber graduated from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1949, he opened Niles Animal Hospital.
We offer a wide range of services including medical, diagnostic, surgical, and preventive health care needs for your pet so they live a longer, healthier, happier life. One of the best things you can do for your pet is to keep him or her healthy. And one of the easiest and least expensive ways to do that is by bringing in your pet for regular exams and vaccinations.
We always welcome new clients and patients to our full service practice, we know you will be very happy with our services. Please see the What To Expect section and take a tour of our hospital, then contact us or request an appointment.
When you arrive for your appointment, you will be greeted warmly. For new clients some paperwork will need to be completed for registration. To ease the process, these forms are available on the website under the "New Client" or "Forms" sections. When an examination room is available one of our team members will usher you into the room.

I have conflicting views of this place. I either have great experiences or terrible experiences when taking my parrots in for emergencies/checkups. Many other reviewers are also correct to note that this place was much better with Dr. Sakas. Now, they over charge, are often rude, and make patients wait hours to be seen.

The worst experience. I waited for two and a half hours (no exaggeration!) for an appointment and they have taken 2 people who arrived after me. After 2 hours of waiting, seeing that was when I started to finally lose patience. Oh, and then they wanted to charge me a $25 overbooking fee- I made this appointment in advance and didn't ask to be overbooked! I get they're having a really rough day, but that doesn't excuse a lack of professionalism and common decency. Let your clients know you're 2+ hours behind.

The sweetest people, made me feel secure when i brought my Pepe over as a kitten (and now) the doctors even commented on how big he was getting since they first met him. Remembering Pepe and making that connection is such a big important factor to me and my pets vet. Updating review: mentioned i was doing curbside for my cat and said i was going to leave for a brief 5 minutes to grab coffee (I've done it every time since i brought him here) while he was getting his shots for 30 minutes and they were going to charge me a fee for leaving the lot even though i was going to come back for him. like i do every time.

Doctors, vet assistants and the vet techs have been so nice and very helpful and informative with my guinea pigs. They showed compassion towards my pets and I really appreciated. They have gone above and beyond for my guinea pigs and I thank them! The reason why I did a 4 star is because they need to work on their customer service. Everytime, I come in, or get checked out, they give me attitude.

I can hear their conversations loud and clear about how much they hate other coworkers, doctors and even other clients. That's very unprofessional. I understand there frustration, they have the most difficult job, unappreciated, overworked and under paid but it's still no excuse to be rude. I hope they improve on this.

I wonder do they really know how to diagnose the issue. I brought my parakeet for the treatment when it is unavle to stand, the bird is hospitalized for 8 days and released saying its healthy and good. I could barely see the bird more sick than it was before admitting. When I took the bird after a week for check up, they advised me to put it down as he became completely paralysed.

I took the bird for second opinion to another hospital, the Vet said the moment bird is paralysed, the previous hospital did not do proper diagnosis and caused the bird to completely paralyse. The staff is sweet and vet gives timely updated but are bad at diagnosing the issue. I would not recommend hospital this to any.

Kept us waiting nearly 30 minutes before being seen. Dog was in there for about 8 minutes. Vet said dog should weight 60 lbs- she is part black Lab and part Bernese Mountain dog (both large breeds). She is currently 99 lbs and would be sickly if she were only 60 lbs. Definitely not returning.

Very friendly and knowledgeable people are working here. My cats got help in a timely manner, at a decent cost. This will be our preferred hospital from now on. I can trust them with my pets.

My leopard gecko had an infection in her mouth, after calling many places the soonest they were able to see her was between 2 and 3 weeks. I called Niles Animal Hospital and explained my gecko's situation. They were able to see her the next day! All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Their prices are affordable and I have nothing but positive things to say about this place.

Very helpful and knowledgeable staff that communicate clearly and compassionately. Maria was particularly wonderful. They've been so great with our chickens (and us humans!). Here's our Daphne, who is joining me at work during her recovery from surgery.

Dr. Sakas was my vet for 25 years. Unfortunately, he passed away from Covid over a year ago.

Dr. Sakas was amazing diagnostician, and he always included me in the medical care of my pets, inviting me to look at x-rays, look into the microscope and he would go over lab results in detail, making notes on the printout as he went. It was a partnership that I valued.

I cannot say the same now. I brought in one of my large parrots for a checkup. Dr. Abete told me my bird was sick and she prescribed an antibiotic. My bird had a severe reaction to the antibiotic and I called first thing in the morning, and was told Dr. Abete was busy and wouldn’t be able to return my call for 2 days. This for a bird under her care in an emergency situation.

The receptionist I spoke to advised me to continue with the medication. It is not for a receptionist to provide medical advice.

Dr. Abete did not return my call, and I ended up at an emergency vet over the weekend. I followed up with a second visit with Dr. Abete, and had some new lab work run. Dr. Abete said my bird was very sick and I should hospitalize her, but I would not be able to visit (they are not allowing clients inside the practice).

I chose not to hospitalize my bird, and was sent home with no less than 5 different medications. My bird began to vomit and lose weight. A few days later, a vet tech phoned and was adamant that I hospitalize her. My bird is a rescue and is afraid of vets and very attached to me. Hospitalization would only have stressed my bird more, and I was afraid I would lose her.

I feel Niles would benefit from better management. Phone calls were not returned, Wait times were hours – I understand things take a little longer for curbside service, but hours? And keeping a nervous pet inside for hours, when really they only needed maybe 15 or 20 minutes and the pet could have waited in my car with me. I never spoke to the same person twice.

And when I directed a message to a specific person, I would hear from someone else. I had to ask for copies of lab work results, when in the past, this was always provided to me. They talked AT me, not TO me. They repeated the same information 3 or 4 times, which only served to make feel as if they were not listening to me, but wanted me to follow their advice blindly.

Due to poor communication, not returning phone calls, receptionists giving medical advice, and lack of respect - I cannot trust this practice to have my pet's best interests at heart. I have found a new vet and will not be returning to Niles Animal Hospital. Thankfully, my bird is recovering under my new vet's care. This is my experience, and my opinion.

We are deeply grateful to Niles Animal Hospital & particularly their OUTSTANDING employee Lucy. As part of her volunteer work, Lucy dropped everything & rescued a seagull trapped with a fish hook in its feet on the balcony of our apartment building, and then Niles Animal Hospital provided free medical care. Clearly, the professionals who work at Niles Animal Hospital are truly dedicated to the well-being of animals, and have generous hearts.

I support businesses like Niles Animal Hospital that serve the community--especially the way Niles Animal Hospital just did (quietly, and with no expectation of public kudos). Thank you to Lucy and Niles Animal Hospital. You are making our community a more humane & compassionate place.

This place is amazing and they will do whatever they can for your pet. They gave us more time with our mini dinosaur as we called her, Sunshine. They took great care of
her anytime she had to go in. Thanks for everything and to all the staff for being there for all our pets during this odd time in the world.

Niles Animal Hospital is so wonderful. Our dog has gone to them regularly. We are getting a new puppy and they have made sure to get our new family member in during this horribly difficult time for their staff with COVID19 restrictions. Melissa was phenomenal to talk to and has the best customer service. I suggest Niles to EVERYONE that asks for a recommendation. Side note if you cannot get through on the phone lines they are VERY responsive to FB Messenger

Everyone works as a team with mutual respect for each other, making the most of every opportunity to best serve animals great & small. And their social skills with customers makes it possible for us to know how to effectively assist our pets once home. Am very grateful to Dr Sakas for taking Dr Klein under his wing because he is already a stellar vet and surgeon for cats, dogs, all birds and exotics.

The best veterinary hospital in Chicagoland! They specialize in all pet types: from birds to lizards, guinea pigs and rabbits, to dogs and cats. The Veterinarians and the staff are all highly skilled, kind, compassionate . I have been taking my pets there since I was a child. They are simply the best.

This is the best place to bring your bird. I’ve been bringing my birds to see Dr. Sakas since I was 9 years old, and he has always offered the best, kindest care for all birds. Each staff member takes extra time with us to get to know the birds. Even the vet techs and receptionists have extensive avian knowledge. I live in Tennessee now, but have made a point to bring my bird with me for a check up whenever I visit Chicago.
