It is sometimes hard for me to admit that it took the results of the 2016 presidential election for me to wake up to the racial inequities that exist in this country and to begin in earnest to go on a journey to learn more. The extent of self-examination I embarked upon, given my white woman status, continues to shake me to the core.

I've gone to many vets in and around Portland for many pets over the last 20 years and I've been consistently impressed with Dr. Wagner and her team at Hawthorne Vet over the last few months. They are very attentive, responsive, and communicative and have helped us learn to manage our kitty Rowan's asthma. We had already taken him to our primary vet and a specialist many times and paid thousands of $$ with no noticeable improvement. Dr. Wagner figured out an approach that combined traditional and holistic medicine and he's responding well. I also really appreciate their commitment to inclusivity here. I would highly recommend this practice.

Dr. Conny Wagner has been helping our cats for many years. In 2014, she saved our cat Halia, with her expertise and understanding of holistic & conventional medicine. 6 years later, Halia's health is changing once again. Dr. Wagner was there for us over the holidays (clinic closed). She made a special trip to the clinic to ensure Halia had enough. medication to keep her comfortable while we review and adjust our plan in January. We are forever grateful for Dr. Wagner & staff's professionalism and the quality of care our pets receive at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic!

We were happy with Dr Connie's care until it came to what we thought was the end of our dog's life. We then felt quite neglected when we didn't receive a follow-up check-in call to see if our dog had made it through the rough patch (which she had, thankfully!). We will not be returning to the clinic.

Lovely staff and veterinarian. If you simply need a holistic veterinarian, this doctor is fine, but if you need an integrative specialist and/or your animal companion is suffering from anything serious, I wouldn't recommend coming here. Sadly, my cat didn't get what she needed here and this holistic veterinarian neglected to even recommend diagnostics when quite clearly my cat needed an ultrasound - at least.

I am big on referrals - if you can't do something, recommend going to someone else. Fortunately I was able to act quickly to get my cat the help she needed and she's thriving again. My initial intention was to go to a different clinic when I first moved here but I came here for the sake of convenience. I should've trusted my intuition.

I've been a client of theirs for twenty years now. The doctors are thorough and caring. The staff is professional and have always offered a gentle hand with my dogs. It's been a great place to keep my pets healthy and happy.

I've been taking my elderly dog here for years now and I couldn't be happier. All of the staff has been nothing but friendly to me and my dog. These veterinarians take their time getting to know you and your pet to ensure your needs are meet. They offer a good balance of Eastern and Western medicine. They do surgeries at their facility, offer acupuncture, and home visits.

We have been taking our dog "Lucilla" to Dr. Wagner for about 6 years and have been very happy. I feel like she is in tune with Lucilla and also really listens to me. We had been looking for an alternative medicine vet, and yet I was still skeptical on our first appointment when a Chinese herbal remedy was prescribed for a significant, periodic skin condition; other vets had always prescribed steroids.

I remember Dr. Wagner reassuring me that if we needed to upgrade to Western medicine pharmaceuticals, we would. (In my opinion, it is so valuable that Dr. Wagner can draw from both families of medicine.) We did Not end up needing to upgrade, and in the years since, we basically never have. Chinese medicine has been very effective for Lucilla, and Dr. Wagner has gracefully gotten her through the various health challenges that have popped up over the years. Lucilla is almost 12 yrs old now, happy and healthy, and busy running up and down hills on hikes whenever possible. We are very grateful!

Not a nice experience. My puppy and I went in for a very expensive intro consult that I was told was an hour, but was a 25 minute wait and 20 minute consult. My dog is going to be my service animal. The vet told me my breed have bad temperaments and are neurotic, and prone to seizures. I was shocked and said surely it's case by case and down to training and breeding too, and she said well sorry if it upsets you but it's the truth and the only reason my puppy has a good temperament is because he's so young that his real temperament isn't showing yet.

I understand about informing owners about health care risks, to empower them in caring appropriately for their pets. But this had no such intent behind it, as it was totally disempowering. I felt belitted, judged and highly uncomfortable. I left crying as all my confidence in our training and my care felt undermined. This is the first time since owning pets through my entire life that a vet has not been kind. I will not be returning.

Found a little stray dog shivering on our porch in the morning. I brought her by to check if she had a microchip. The receptionist scanned her and we didn't find one. But she was very helpful and took my number and name in case someone called in looking for their dog. Someone did! So through them, we were able to reunite the dog with its owner quickly.

I love how knowledgeable Dr. Wagner is about natural treatments, like homeopathy, Chinese herbs, acupuncture and nutrition. And of course she is well versed in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and treatments too. It gives me great comfort to have a vet who understands and makes room for my personal preference to avoid giving drugs to my animals.

I ask a lot of questions and she has always been patient and helpful. I have taken my animals to Hawthorne Vet Clinic for many years. My animals like Dr. Wagner and the vet techs, who are all very kind. And since one of my cats is very shy and afraid of new experiences, it's great that Dr. Wagner also offers house calls!

Hi. I just moved one block from this clinic. I went in to see about getting my cat a pedi. The receptionist coldly said "We're holistic. You'll need to pay $160 and have us observe you and your cat". My kitty hates the car after flying here from India but off we went to his first vet on Alberta and 18th. He gets excellent care there. Nice welcome to the neighborhood.

This place is anti-vaccine! I don't mind what someone decides to do with their pet as long as it's legal, but they mislead people about what the industry standards are. They tell you that it isn't normal to vaccinate your dog after their first round of puppy shots.

We've had some real challenges with our kitty lately! And, we're 100% confident that he wouldn't have lived through them if not for the expert, loving, holistic care that he's gotten at this clinic. Everything about it feels good, from the feel of the waiting room, to the wonderful front desk staff, fabulous vet techs and excellent vets who. practice Chinese medicine and do acupuncture as well as laser acupuncture (at a fair price!).

Of course, having the background of western medicine means that they have the full-spectrum of care available to us. The compassionate care they offer to our kitties is unsurpassed and we're extremely relieved to know we have a great fit here! We've been around the block with this particular kitty but landing at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic feels like home. To us, they're family

Dr. Wagner and her staff are awesome. I got the impression from the moment I walked in that they genuinely cared about my pet. Dr. Wagner is incredibly knowledgeable and gentle. I had a few bad experiences with some other vets so its nice to have found a place I can trust. I recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone.

I highly recommend Dr. Wagner at Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic. My Boston Terrier, Opie, was diagnosed with mast cell cancer, a type of skin cancer, 3 years ago. The vet who did the biopsy was pushing surgery, chemo, and radiation, and told me Opie could be dead in 6 weeks if I didn't do it. I don't believe in western medical treatment for cancer, so I did a bunch of research and went to see Dr. Wagner.

She was awesome - totally supportive of my decision to treat him alternatively, and we got him started on a regimen of Chinese herbs and other immune boosting supplements and reviewed his diet. Opie just turned 9 and is still going strong! I'm asked frequently if he's a puppy. She takes a lot of time with her patients and answers questions thoroughly. Her office is run efficiently and the front desk staff are super friendly and helpful. I recently moved away from Portland and have not yet found a vet to replace her!

Our four legged family members have always gotten loving care here. Who's to say if they would have lived longer, but as a guardian for my pets, I found comfort and confidence that they were getting the very best possible care and I never questioned that I was being upsold.

I was worried about getting my dog neutered and the loss of testosterone too soon for his growing bones. The daycare he attends require sterility of all dogs older than 6mo of age. After looking into alternate methods of neutering I found Dr. Wagner is one of the few vets in Portland who performs vasectomies for dogs as an alternative. She is caring and knowledgable. The staff that work there are friendly and were super sweet to my dog whenever we went in. I am super thrilled to have found a wonderful veterinary clinic and vet.

I am so impressed by Dr. Wagner and Dr. Schaefer (these are the only two I have seen), both were very kind and knowledgeable with my Lily's anxiety and luxating patellas. I had a bad experience with another practice which left her with very high anxiety which is not good for her health. The staff and vets went out of their way to help her and. treat her with such compassion, kindness and positive reinforcements (treats), she now looks forward to going to the vet and is very relaxed; not the panting, scared, flight response she was previously.

It is also important that they understood I had a bad experience at another vet and did not hold that against me, lets face it, vets have to deal with the vets family, so communication and compassion is the key, I appreciate this so very much. I drive a ways, but it is worth it. Thank you!

Dr. Ingrid and her team have been very thorough with my sphynx kittens. The staff is awesome, including the receptionists! If they can't find a diagnoses, they will refer you to a specialist. They have you & your pet in their best interest.

Where most traditional vets default to steroids when anything goes wrong, HVC has always offered a wide range of incredibly effective alternatives that are less invasive, have fewer side effects, and cost a fraction of the price.while continuing to offer traditional care when it's warranted. Their staff is calm, gentle, and loving making what is. usually a traumatic experience for pets something that turns out to be significantly more pleasant than the drive there (my cats hate the car). I am always so appreciative of everything that they have to offer.

I've been taking my 8 year old cat with an itchy skin condition to Dr. Wagner for several years now. The time Dr. Wagner spends talking to me about my cat's condition is priceless. She listens carefully to what I am saying and offers several treatment options. I am honest with her about what I am prepared to do with my cat. It's a mutual agreement - not a command.

You have to be of a certain belief system to go to a naturopathic veterinarian. She is not a traditional, western vet and you must be prepared for that kind of experience. I highly recommend Hawthorne Veternary Clinic and Dr. Wagner. The only reason they get 4 stars instead of 5, is the parking situation is awful and the price is high.

In May of this year, I lost my dog of 8 years. He died 4 days after being put on meds that were prescribed by Wagner of Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic. We had gone in to attempt to relieve him of his chronic itchiness, and 4 days later, he went into a massive seizure, experienced severe brain hemorrhaging, & could not be saved when we got him to Dove Lewis.

I was told by Wagner that the drugs may or may not have caused an unforeseen exacerbation of a pre-existing neurological condition which was never looked for or diagnosed. I trusted her supposed expertise, & when I adopted a dog from the humane society months later, I chose to bring him to her. When a suture from his being neutered surfaced many weeks after the procedure, she insisted on sedating him in order to remove it but assured he would only be out for a few minutes, and that he would be right as rain when he woke up.

He ended up being out for over 20 minutes & was convulsing heavily. She forcefully tried to wake him up despite my pleads for her not to, and he awoke with a startled yelp of pain. He could barely walk, was dazed and slack jawed, and his normally springy tale hung limp and dragged on the ground for the next hour. I am now convinced without a doubt that Wagner is unfit for her chosen profession and should be stripped of her credentials.

Caring Professionals. We've been using the Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic for years. They've helped our 4 cats over the course of 10 + years. They blend traditional medicine with herbal remedies creating a low-stress plan to help animals regain health. From the techs to the doctors, everyone is kind, gentle, and knowledgeable. Even in times of crisis, they have been calm and caring. I kinda wish they were my doctors, too.

Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic has been my primary veterinary clinic for 14 years. My first furry companion received excellent care from Dr. Hamann throughout his declining years. Her knowledge, treatment and care allowed him to have less pain during his last years without dosing him with pharmaceuticals. She has been the primary care with Obie. He's had a few surgeries ie. neutering and teeth cleaning and has always recovered quickly.

His yearly check ups are thorough. Most recently Dr. Wagner treated Obie when he needed to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Her care, treatment and knowledge is also top notch. I've read a few reviews here. Let me address the cost first: The cost is comparable to other clinics. The front office staff many years ago was less than great. The 'new' receptionist is friendly, easy to work with and doesn't ignore you.

Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic is a warm and welcoming place where you are welcomed by friendly staff. There is a a personal touch you feel as soon as you enter the lobby. Dr Hamann is our vet and she has gone beyond the call of duty spending hours of personal time talking with me on the phone and doing research on my behalf. Dr Hamann uses both traditional and modern methods and medications.

I feel we work as a team with mutual respect. She is a good listener and problem solver. Dr Hamann saved my dog's life and is now working with us on a new health issue. She never gives up. Everyone at the clinic has welcomed my family and we feel well cared for in a most gentle and caring way. Thank you all

This place ripped me off! Our little dog was diagnosed with cancer 2 days ago and calling around brought us to this place for a blood test and a treatment plan for $150. We were informed during the "consultation" that they did not do oncology and wanted to give our dog some kind of herbs. We received nothing for our time and money, don't use Hawthorne vet clinic.

Careful with this veterinarian, one of the female doctors over did it with the medicine. My cat died a few weeks later. I do not recommend taking an animal here if you love it.

This review is purely based on being a new patient and without testing their services. I'm not a fan of my other vet so I called and asked to schedule an appointment. I was told my dog needed a full physical (despite having one less than 2 months ago at my other vet). They said it was policy and wouldn't budge. Oh and the initial appt would be a low low price of $150. I passed and will seek a new vet. I can only imagine how future conversations about pet care will go "if you want to talk on the phone, please insert your credit card now".

I came in to purchase something and stood staring at the reception in the back room(10 ft away) as she typed something. She failed to acknowledge that I was waiting. When I asked to pay she said she would help me when she was done typing? I have considered bringing my cats here. But I can never get passed the snotty front desk. It is a great idea for natural pet care but you have to pay a "consult" fee just to introduce your pet.

Something around $150.00. Their customer service is the classic Portland customer service model of which is based on being rude and pretentious. Customer service means that you value customers and your main purpose is to be friendly! No customers, no job!

Dr. Judkins saved my cat's life! As a kitten, Sasha was diagnosed with FIP-like symptoms and was near death, but with the help of both Chinese and Western herbs, holistic and allopathic treatments, he made it through. Seven years later, Sasha is healthy and as lively as can be. Subsequently, I've taken all five of my cats there. Because this is a holistic clinic, nutrition is a key part of the evaluation of an animal's health, so a significant amount of an exam's time can be spent discussing the animal's diet. Switching my cats to a raw meat diet, their species-appropriate diet, changed their lives for the better. Chronic health problems, like crystals in urine, no longer exist.

They are healthier and happier for it. I was so impressed by the treatment my cats received that I was inspired and motivated to go back to school to be a veterinarian. I am proud to note that late last year, I got a job working at the clinic one day a week. I can see how you might think that this review may be biased because of this, but quite the contrary. My opinion is only reinforced now that I know the doctors and staff better. Thanks, Hawthorne Vet Clinic. Cheers!

Our cat has a knee injury (patella out of alignment) which was diagnosed by another vet. I was interested to see if acupuncture could help her condition so I called and spoke directly to Dr. Judkins. He said that acupuncture could be beneficial for this condition. We discussed the price and I was asked to pay half up front. I knew the price was higher than a typical vet visit but I agreed because it seemed like my cat would be getting something a traditional vet could not offer.

When we met with the vet, our cat was agitated both from being in her carrier and hearing another cat howling in the back room. We were surprised when the Dr. sprayed Rescue Remedy in our cats face to calm her down. In our house, we use a spray bottle for discipline. In that environment, our cat was never relaxed enough to go through an acupuncture treatment.

Instead of treating our cat, the Dr. proceeded to spend the time with us telling us our cat should loose weight (which we heard from the previous vet) and what cat food he likes best. In the end, our cat never received any special treatment and the vet did not have any reservations charging us the full amount for acupuncture. It wasn't until we complained that we didn't receive the treatment that we expected, that he begrudgingly reduced the cost by a fraction. All and all, we thought we were going to get a treatment that other vets don't provide but what we got was a very expensive second opinion and a lecture on cat food.

This place is great! Just moved to the area and was looking for a holistic vet. The staff is very knowledgeable and most of all friendly. You and your "kids" (the pets) are a name not a number. The location is also very convenient!

I am terribly impressed with this place; I was referred by a friend and was skeptical of holistic or Chinese remedies for my cat. I am not against either but was skeptical of a correct application by a vet. I was very impressed; my cat Gregory has had an on/off allergy for the last decade that many vets simply treat with cortisone that can have some very bad long term side effects.

The Vet Jeffrey Judkins was through and recommended a herbal tincture that was phenomenal and cleared up everything. We have taken her and other cats back and the results have always been impressive. This place is not cheap, but weighed against multiple return visits verses symptoms disappearing for 2 years, it was worth it. Only other issue is that the vet we worked with was professional and wonderful but his people skills.well he was smart to pick working with animals. But as a professional I was very impressed.
