Services
Arguello Pet Hospital is proud to serve the San Francisco CA area for everything pet related. Our veterinary hospital is run by Dr. Jamie Ina, with continued guidance from her father Dr. Michael Ina. Both are licensed, experienced San Francisco veterinarians who are dedicated to providing quality care for their patients, clients and staff.
I was first hired at the Arguello Pet Hospital in the summer of 1968. I was hired as a kennel person to gain experience in veterinary medicine which was a prerequisite to apply to the veterinary schools. I continued working at Arguello Pet Hospital while I was an undergraduate student at the University of California, Davis.
The grieving process includes accepting the reality of your loss, accepting that the loss and accompanying feelings are painful, and adjusting to your new life that no longer includes your pet. How do I tell my family? Family members usually are already aware of a pet's problems. However, you should.
Since being built as an animal hospital in 1928, Arguello Pet Hospital has had many previous owners. Michael Ina first started working at Arguello Pet Hospital when it was owned by Dr. Sujohn and was managed by Karl Fischer, DVM, back in the summer of 1968. Michael was getting the necessary experience to apply to the School of Veterinary Medicine, Davis.

I've been taking my dog here for about a year now. Now that has changed due to the lack of service knowledge and professionalism of the front desk. ( 2 Asian women). Since I walked in they have been a bad vibe and very unpleasant to talk to. Im not the type to write reviews unless I feel that a place makes you feel ripped off. If I'm going to pay for your services better have a better attitude about it.
Before you do anything here make sure you get an estimate or quote before you take your dog in. They are very misleading here. The 2 Asian women at the front desk made me never want to come back. Good job.

This place is the best. We got our first dog as independent adults at the San Francisco SPCA and were lucky enough to live near by at the time. Arguello Pet Hospital has been kind, thorough and understanding the entire time. 10 years later and no matter where we have moved in the Bay Area we make the trip back here every time. Being able to trust your vet is so important when our pets can't always communicate what is wrong clearly.
I trust Arguello Pet Hospital completely and I'm so grateful that I found a place I feel comfortable enough to do that. They might be a little pricey at times, but you get what you pay for and here that means high quality veterinary care. It is worth every penny knowing my dog is getting the best care possible.

Been taking our two Malteses here for years. Staff (front desk, vet techs and more) are always courteous and understanding of our pets' needs, and they are professional and kind. They strive for a stress-less experience which matters. We've met with a few vets there, and we've had positive experiences each time. Dr. Ina is our primary vet, and she is amazing in her approach with our dogs and with us.
She is thorough, calm, extremely knowledgeable and genuine. Our pups are almost 13 yo now, and we appreciate Dr. Ina and the Arguello team for being a solid partner in helping our pups live the best quality of life we can provide.

We used to live near Arguello pet hospital and take our cat there for her yearly check ups. We moved a year ago to Marin and started taking her to a vet closer to our new house. Suddenly on a Sunday morning she attacked us. She wouldn't calm down and was hissing and growling for hours, it was extremely unusual and we knew something must be urgently wrong.
We finally got her into her carrier early the next morning when she had calmed down a bit (but was still hissing). We couldn't get in with our Marin vet, who said they were scheduling 3 months out and referred us to an emergency clinic. The emergency clinic wouldn't see us because she didn't have any open wounds or broken bones. Finally we called Arguello in a state of great distress.
The front desk staff was very understanding over the phone and got us in within 2 hours! We saw Dr. Nishimura who was very knowledgable and compassionate. We felt whole staff at Arguello listened to us and went out of their way to get our cat the care she needed. Since the incident Dr. Nishimura has been very supportive and responsive over email. We really can't thank the team at Arguello Pet Hospital enough for being there for our family in our time of need.

Everyone at Arguello Pet Hospital works so hard for any pet they encounter and have made me feel very supported whenever my cats are needing care. They work hard to help you through whatever your pet is going through and are so kind while doing it. Otis, Ram, and I are forever grateful for the care they have given!

Avoid Dr. Wolfe no matter what. She is impatient, arrogant and will lie straight to your face. When I asked her to explain the difference between animal probiotics and probiotics humans take, she couldn't, she snapped at me and said our probiotics are just better for your animal. Great answer, based on science? I should trust you why? They are not taking new patients, but try to get an appointment as an existing patient.
Their outgoing message is a joke. The technician who also answers the phone, I believe his name is Matt is really great, he is the one good thing about this place. Arguello Pet Hospital is decent inside, very small and not very welcoming. They like to do everything in the back, EVERYTHING. I have never been to a vet that insists on this. When you ask if they can give your pet their shot in the room you are in they refuse, why?
And why are you shamed for asking? I found this place based on its reviews, which is really alarming. Is this the best San Francisco has to offer? Is this what people are willing to accept? This place could do better in so many ways.

I have been a client of Arguello since 2006 and have taken all my dogs to them over the years: - Hamish - Digger - Tucker - Cassie - Niner - Wee One - Finnegan - Harley - Hana - Lolli - Pinto - Mozart I have always the best care for all of them, and I would highly recommend Arguello for their professional and friendly care

I have been a client of Arguello Pet Hospital for approximately 50 years, need I say more? I have always had large dogs, but my husband has had smallish dogs. All of them have received the very best of care and have lived longer healthier lives than their breeds usually live. The medical visits for indigestion problems, cancer, torn tendons, a serious burn from a car accident amongst other aging ailments have always been treated with the upmost care and expertise.

I grew up taking my pets here and was excited to bring my puppy here as they had provided great service before. While I am sure my experience is also a result of the pandemic, personnel shortages, and an increase in pet ownership I'm sad to say the treatment my puppy and I received was sub-par and we have decided to work with another clinic. My puppy broke his leg at 6 mo old.
I called Arguello only to be told that they could not see me at all after I had taken him to the ER over the weekend. Not only was the front desk woman rude she also offered literally no help in referring me to any specialist and essentially told me I was on my own to find care for my dog despite the fact that my dog was an established patient. Thankfully the ER doctor was able to contact a specialist she knew and get me set up and taken care of. Arguello should have assisted in this process rather than simply telling me to figure it out on my own.
I also contacted them a number of times when my puppy had recurring vomiting and diarrhea as I was concerned. They were only able to see me once and kept telling me to go to the ER. They also would not prescribe medication to help in the event of another episode which meant I had to keep going to the ER whenever this came up because he could never get in to be seen. Finally, one episode was so bad that after taking him to the ER (because they couldn't see me) I was able to get in days later and I requested an ultrasound and a GI blood panel.
I was told that I could try giving him vitamin supplements or try him on a prescription diet but was not given a clear diagnosis nor path for treatment. Additionally, my puppy was seen by another vet, and my vet Dr. Ina never touched base to discuss the labs, etc. 3 days later I took him to another vet who immediately diagnosed him with IBD (based on the exact same ultrasound and blood panel) and got him on a regimen to manage his disease.
This vet also kindly sent me home with prescriptions in case he did vomit or have diarrhea so I would not have to pay to go to the ER only to be handed these medications. I am not sure what has happened over the years but the level of care and kindness towards pet parents has decreased. I would only consider coming here for annual checkups/vaccinations as they are no assistance with more serious/pressing needs and it is virtually impossible to get seen.

Couldn't have wished for a better vet in San Francisco. After a very unprofessional visit at Urban Pet Hospital, I was referred to Arguello Pet Hospital by at least 10 people (no exaggeration). And I am so glad I switched! They are very caring, and have always been very attentive and loving towards my Shiba every time I bring her in. We were originally seeing Dr. Bonetto, but unfortunately he left after a couple years of seeing him.
We then switched to Dr. Reeves who we love! She's so caring and loving and has a gentle hand when handling my dog. I love that she doesn't push all vaccinations on my dog, and takes the time to explain to me why she wouldn't need it or why she would recommend it. I also didn't receive any judgement or negative comments about feeding her raw, which is something I really appreciate from a vet.
Thank you front staff and vet techs/ vets for your continued hard work during the pandemic and the difficulties that you have gone through to give your patients the best care possible!

I have being taking my two cats here for few years. Mostly of the time I was happy with the service, however, I never had any serious emergencies before. Last Thursday, on April 1st 2021, I took my older cat for his routine appointment, and apparently everything was okay and under control, he just needed an increase dose of medication for his thyroid problem.
He was happy and very playful. On Sunday he woke up very lethargic and breathing with difficulty. I took him to the SF SPCA on Fillmore Street since Arguello Hospital Vet was closed. Over there he was prescribed asthma medication, after exams and X Rays. They said that he was having an asthma attack, which I never even knew before that he had asthma problem.
On Sunday night he didn't sleep and neither was he able to eat much. On Monday he still having the same noisy breathing. I called Arguello since I would like to bring him in and have a second and different opinion from a clinic that he was a patient for years. I was VERY CLEAR about the emergency situation, but instead of saying that I could bring him in, they said that I should contact the SPCA again.
Once I took my cat again to the SF SPCA, they still not had received my cats blood test from the Arguello Pet Hospital and any information. In the end, I was told to put my cat to sleep saying that he was having an asthma crises and about to have heart failure, the best option would be to let him go. On Tuesday his veterinary from ARGUELLO called and said that she didn't see anything about heart failure in the report from SPCA. I'm shocked with the treatment that my cat received between these two places, and the idea of have to euthanized my cat for no reason, is absolutely unbearable.
Until now, I'm not sure if putting him down was the only or at least the best option. Also the delay, the lack of communication by Arguello and SPCA and mostly important, the fact that his primary clinic for years, refused to seem him and sending him in a life threatening condition to another hospital. I'm heart broken and terribly disappointed. What a shame! * No need to see here any FAKE apologies from this place.

I was not liking the idea of dumping my kitty Desmond at the door, and picking him up after his appointment, but i had put off his exam and shots for too long. I was happy to find out I could go in the exam room as well! Every Dr. I have met at Arguello has been wonderful. Professional and caring. And the staff are great too. Plus I never have had to wait very long. I was thinking about finding somewhere closer to me, as I live in the Mission, but after researching other Pet Hospitals, decided it's worth going a bit farther!

Can't say enough great things about Arguello Pet Hospital. We had the privilege of having Dr. Jamie Ina be our dog Maggie's primary vet her whole life (almost 12 years) and during that time we consistently had amazing, professional & compassionate care. Sadly, we lost our old pup a couple of weeks ago, but we will definitely be coming back to Arguello Pet Hospital & Dr. Jamie Ina for our future pup's veterinarian care.

Incredible experience. Everyone who works here is incredibly thoughtful and kind. I highly recommend Dr. Karissa Nishimura. she has taken care of my Pippin twice now & both times I have felt confident that his well being, comfort and healthy were the first priority. Thank you everyone @ Arguello Pet Hospital!

Dr Bonetto removed 3 of Mazie Bears broken teeth. I was nervous about the procedure. but the staff at Arguello did a great job answering all of my questions, and a addressing my concerns. Mazie did great. after the procedure, and today she has a happy healthy mouth. In the future, should I have dental needs, I will certainly bring my pet to your clinic.

I've been bringing my dog, Mochi, to Arguello Pet Hospital for years now! I previously went to Pet Cove Animal Hospital in Foster City, but when I moved into San Francisco the commute became a little harder without a car. My previous vet highly highly recommended them and I was so happy he did. I've met with a few vets here now, but the last couple years I've been meeting with Dr. Bonetto.
He has been great with Mochi and he is super patient with me and all my tiger-mom questions, and he is especially good at laying out all my options when I see something happening with Mochi. I definitely get a little paranoid with my little guy as he gets older, but they give me the peace of mind that I'm getting really great care. Definitely recommend them and have been super happy so far!

I've been bringing my almost 6 year old pup here since she was a little baby fluff. She was spayed here and the vet (Dr. Hathaidharm) did a perfect job - very clean, barely a scar was left behind. The vets here are very knowledgeable and thorough, the front desk staff have always been friendly and helpful, and the techs are kind and seem experienced enough to me. I used to drive over here when I lived in Bayview, now I'm in the same neighborhood as them. They're great.

Arguello is amazing! We have been taking our dog Caramel there since we adopted her a year ago and their service and attention to her is amazing. The front desk staff works wonders and does an incredible job of answering questions over the phone. They also do a fantastic job of ordering medicines and letting you know when they are ready for pickup. Further, Arguello does a great job of taking care of your pet when they are there.
The vet team here is amazing and accurately address the issues and offer solutions. Our dog had to get spayed as well as get some tumors removed shortly after we got her and Arguello did a great job on the surgery and she recovered quickly. Arguello isn't a vet hospital that's looking to nickel and dime you for everything in regards to your pet. They have you and your pet's best interest and it really shows!

I've been taking my cat Spyder there for almost a year to have his nails clipped & they do a great job. The 2 young ladies who have been clipping his nails the past few months do an excellant job in handling him & clipping his nails. I also asked how much for a check-up & it's alot cheaper than where I've been taking him. I'm going to start taking him there for his future check-ups.
