Read the whole thing…. DO NOT EVER BRING YOUR PET TO THIS VET! If I could give this practice a 0, I would. The lack of empathy and unprofessionalism that was demonstrated by Dr Michael Severin and his staff was cruel and shocking! On Wednesday 9/7 our baby dog was attacked by 2 bigger dogs. He had multiple bite marks and was bleeding. We quickly rushed him to this emergency vet thinking that they would do everything possible to save our dogs life - like running labs, doing X-rays, etc.
The doctor had done a quick superficial examination without doing ANY diagnostics to rule out serious issues. They released our dog and ENSURED us that it was not serious and that he would be okay. Oh and prior to them releasing our dog, they stamped us with an $800 bill and held our dog hostage until it was paid. Dr Michael Severin NEVER came out to speak to us or offer any words of comfort - all messages were relayed through the phone and his techs.
We woke up the next morning to find out that our baby had passed away. It is VERY upsetting that this doctor and his staff only did the bare minimum and didn’t even try to save our baby’s life. They didn’t care about our dog and provided horrible service. The treatment that we received during and after this situation was repulsive. I would NEVER trust any animal with this doctor or his staff. If you care about your pet, do not ever bring them to this vet.

Do not take your pets here!! While I was on vacation, my mom was watching our fur baby. During this time It seemed he had a stroke. We called this place and told them that my mom was on her way with our pup and for them to be ready. The first thing they said on the phone was “it will be $900” they had no idea what happened, haven’t seen our pup yet, NOTHING!
How can you give someone a price and know nothing of the situation or what is wrong? I feel this place takes advantage of people that are desperate to help their babies. Unfortunately, my baby arrived their with no heartbeat, he passed away at home. They had zero sympathy for my mother that was a mess and when I was asking questions over the phone the sounded annoyed, not what you want to feel from a vet tech after you find out your pup has passed away. My friend had an awful experience here as well. Staff is very RUDE!! I’ll be surprised if you even see an actual doctor in the building. Just STAY AWAY!

They saved my cat Oliver’s life twice in one day. As I was bringing him, my carrier collapsed and he escaped in the parking lot. The techs ran out to help and were miraculously able to get him. They brought him back from kidney failure and were extremely easy to communicate to and were very compassionate. I was able to take him here after every vet and hospital in the area telling me they were full and couldn’t see him for two days.

My wife and I took our dog here for an emergency visit. She had a laceration on her leg about 2" in length. It wasn't very deep but definitely needed stitches. They tried to charge $1100 for the sutures. When I declined services they returned my dog with her open wound exposed. When I asked the older lady who brought her back if she could at the very least put the bandages back on her leg so the wound wouldn't be exposed I was treated with absolutely one of the worst customer service experiences of my life acting as if asking them to put a bandage on the open wound was out of line.
I paid them $110 for 15 minutes of there time. they had such little care for my dogs well being that they returned her with an open wound? When I then said something about the pricing being ridiculous I was met with more disrespect from her. She said "next time you go to the doctors why don't you see what they charge you, this is far cheaper". I left and took her to Wilson animal hospital, they're doing the same exact procedure for under $300.
They take advantage of the fact you're desperate to make sure your animal is okay. Not only do they try to reach their hands as far as possible into your pockets but they then treat you with little to no class. 0/10 wouldn't recommend.

Dr. Severin and the staff here saved my cat's life, not once but three times! This is an emergency vet and much like human emergency care, it is expensive. However, they have the best prices out of all of the emergency vets in the area and will help you figure out funding through Care Credit and Scratchpay (I used both!). I haven't experienced any of the problems cited in other reviews.
When we found out our lethargic cat was close to death from a urinary blockage, the vet assistant was so compassionate and made us feel like it was no bother to call as much as we wanted to check on him. When we came in a few weeks later for the same issue, they did not ask us to repeat any of the bloodwork or testing, which they easily could have, and that saved us at least $700.
There was no wait time, but if there had been I trust their ability to triage and prioritize the sickest pets, especially during staffing shortages that all vets are experiencing. They provided excellent follow up care, went above and beyond to help with our prescription food situation, and, when Hopps needed an emergency procedure that I knew they didn't perform, they called around for me and found me a clinic in Novi who could do it right away. Thank you to everyone at VES for giving my boy a second, third, and fourth chance at life!

Thankfully, we've only had to use an emergency veterinary hospital twice. Honestly, our first visit was just me being overly dramatic and our cat probably could've waited to see her regular vet, so we were low on the triage list, and had a 5 hour a wait, as they were extremely busy and the Dr and nurses were in and out of surgery. Our cat was seen though and she was given the care that she needed and sent home with the proper medications to treat her symptoms.
Our most recent visit was entirely different. Our other cat snuck out of the house, upon finding her, we did check her over, but couldn't find any abrasions or injuries, so we figured she was shook up and would take a couple days to calm down. After a few days, she was calmer, but also not really keen on being touched (very grouchy). We looked her over again and she was in fact wounded, and it was definitely festering. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to make it to our regular vet within the next few days, so we called ahead and asked if she could be seen.
The staff, just as with our first visit, was sympathetic, compassionate, and professional. We brought her in and upon further inspection, were informed that the infection was worse than we were thinking. She went to surgery and was treated. The communication was excellent and my mind was definitely at ease knowing that we made the right decision to have her seen sooner rather than later.

Absolutely loved this hospital. never have i once had a great experience like this. The front desk lady was super sweet, they got my dog in right away for his vitals while i was filling out paper work. I had to take my dog in as an emergency walk in for a hurt/bloody paw. the wait time was extremely short, was expecting to be there for at least 3 hours as they told me the more severe pets would be seen first but i was out within 2. when my dog was being discharged the technician Tina was extremely kind. i asked so many questions and she never once made me feel like i was bothering her. she even assured me if i had any other questions no matter the time i could always call back and ask.
She thoroughly explained exactly what was done and what medications were given and made me feel a lot better about what my dog has. Very grateful i got a Tina as my technician!

TRYING TO CHARGE YOU ADDITIONALLY AFTER YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID IN FULL AT TIME OF SERVICE! Unfortunately my diabetic cat was seizing so i took him in late at night for treatment to see what can be done. Immediately starting working on him with an IV nothing was asked as to what i was going to be charged or permission to start any treatment. Discovered they had already taken blood without my knowledge. Came to me with a game plan that would cost me over $700.
Unable to pay that the nurse stated she would do a quick glucose test with a drop of the blood for me with devastating results. Upon a determination of he was not going to make it. They gave me a total charge and i paid in full. Said receipt would be emailed. About a week later they sent me an invoice for $175. They removed $140 of that because they were trying to charge me for disposal of my kitty when i took my kitty home with me.
But are still trying to charge me $35 for that drop of blood they drew without my knowledge. Refusing to remove the charge. How can a business charge you one amount at time of service and then come back and try to get more money out of you! Especially in a situation like this of losing a family member. $35 is not going to break the clinic! And in my opinion is doing things illegally!

Had to rush my year old chihuahua, Coco here after she unknowingly ingested something that ended up being toxic. It was really scary not knowing what was happening. I thought that the staff were all really nice and the Veterinarian immediately realized what the problem was. I was just very fortunate and lucky that the situation hadn't been much worse with whatever she had eaten.
I see a lot of negative reviews and mostly people complaining about the costs of the emergency services. It's an emergency service and I feel that most people do not realize that pets can be very costly and this is especially true when it comes to unforeseen events and illnesses. I further feel that after hours clinics such as this are providing a very important and sometimes life saving service that most people fail to realize how costly it can be run said facility as well as any prescribed treatment.
I am just very thankful for the all of the staff and the treatments provided. Coco bounced right back this morning and I couldn't be happier to have her safe, healthy and happy again

I'm very happy with the friendly, helpful, and fast moving staff. I have been to several vet ERs within a 30 minute radius of here and this place is very the fastest and very helpful with my 2 and half week puppies. All other places I've tried where completely booked out. One vet ER told me to come in, but after 20 minutes of driving once I got there they turned me away and we unfortunately lost a puppy that night. I really appreciate veterinary Emergency service on John R, for helping us in our time of need.

My cat started showing signs of sickness. I took her to this vet and they were unable to give me answers. The vet told me her bloodwork was normal and that he really didn't have any answers for me. My cat wouldn't eat, or stand up and I knew something was wrong. I took her back and they insisted that an overnight stay would help. So I paid a ridiculous amount of money for her to stay the night and come back to me in the same condition.
That Monday I was able to call her regular vet and they knew what was wrong with her based off her bloodwork without even seeing her. She ended up having a deadly disease called FIP. I spent thousands here trying to figure out what was going on when her bloodwork already showed the issue. Months later, I decided to give them a second chance and went in fully prepared to put my cat down because she had gotten so bad. (My regular vet wasn't open and I couldn't watch her suffer anymore) They told me something else was going on and gave me hope that she would be okay.
I spent another $400 that night and she passed away the next day. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I felt I was taken advantage of because I was emotional and they could get money out of me because I was desperate to save my cat. I would give negative stars if possible. Truly a nightmare experience.

Thank you for being one of the only emergency vets open during these hectic times. I've taken my dog here for four years and the staff has always shown compassion and urgency with him. The treatment was expensive, but well worth it to have my baby back at home tonight. Very thankful for your clinic! Keep up the amazing work!

I just picked up my dogs from Veterinary Emergency Service in Madison Heights. I have to say, I experienced none of what the negative reviews say about the staff and care. Despite the parking lot being jam-packed, they worked quickly and efficiently to treat both of my dogs for a potentially fatal accidental prescription med ingestion. The staff was kind, caring and professional even during my late night and early morning calls. Is it expensive? Sure, but having gone to several emergency vets in the Detroit area, they are in line with other facilities.
It's an emergency vet, they have 24 hour treatment and monitoring; it's what my dogs needed and what they received. Thank you so much! I'm very grateful for everyone who assisted in their care. Note to the manager, the gal working the desk last night, I'm afraid that I didn't note her name, was a ray of sunshine during a frightening few hours. What a gem!

We brought a kitten that we found in the backyard. We waited there for 5 hours, and no help was provided to the kitten. The clinic told us to wait a bit longer, because you have no Emergency situation. We did not know how long we still had to wait, an hour, two or all night. We took the kitten and took him to another clinic in the morning. But he died! And now tell me how it was possible to keep an animal for 5 hours and not provide assistance? If this is not Emergency, then what, in their understanding, is Emergency?!

We took our sick large breed dog to this facility late one evening suffering from twisted stomach. The dog walked into the surgery area and we had great hope that with the proper skill and dedication successful surgery could have been performed to save our dog. A visiting veterinary surgeon performed the surgery which was very expensive. It appeared that the surgery took too long and was too extensive so, unfortunately, our dog made it though the surgery but died shortly after the surgery.
Perhaps just untwisting the stomach and closing the incision could have been enough to save our dog. This did not happen!! We cannot recommend this veterinary service and we will never go back there if we get another pet..
