Don Costlow Newton Veterinary Hospital has been proudly serving our Sussex County community since 1960. It started when Dr. William Gray built Newton Veterinary Hospital in 1960 and treated farm and companion animals. Prior to that, he had practiced with his father, Dr. John Gray, in the center of Newton. His grandfather, Dr. Whitfield Gray, was also a veterinarian in Sussex County dating back to the turn of the century. The practice was sold to Dr. Don Costlow in July of 1997. Not only has our building grown, but so has Sussex County, our staff, and our services!

Waited over an hour to be called in for my cat that had an infected scratch. No big deal and pretty much expected in the ER. We were called in and the tech looked at my cat and said "okay I'll go grab the doctor and we'll be right back". An hour an a half goes by and no word from anyone. I go to the receptionist and let her know and ask if they forgot about us and she kindly said she would check.

One of the other receptionists chimed in frantically and said "we're dealing with a critical patient!" Yes I understand how an ER works, some issues are more serious and higher priority. Don't you think someone would let us know that instead of leaving us sitting for an hour and a half? I was with my 4 year old daughter too which only made it worse.

We gave it 15 more minutes and then just left. Not 2 minutes after I pull out of the parking lot they call and ask if I just left. I told them yes and explained everything that happened and that I would turn around and come back if they could take us right away. She asked the doctor and the doctor said we would have to go to the back of the line which is really just spiteful in light of us already being there for 3 hours and not being cared for. Very unprofessional and uncaring. Next time I will drive 3 times the distance to avoid this place and get real care.

Our current Vet couldn't see our cat today and she was very ill. We felt very scared and helpless. My husband brought her in and he said it was an extremely positive experience. The staff showed that they cared and they diagnosed our sweet cat properly. She is still currently there overnight receiving treatment. We are happy to trust she is in good hands. Thank you to Newton Veterinary Hospital for making a hard day a little easier!

Newton Vet Hospital may be open 24/7 but in my opinion they are ill equipped to care for pets. I made an appointment for my dog to receive an ultrasound because she is prone to bladder stones. I was told to bring her in at 8am without eating. I did as I was asked. After 3 hours, I called to inquire if my dog was ready to be picked up. I waited on hold for about 5 minutes and was told that the company that comes in to do ultrasounds was going to be there in the afternoon.

I expressed my concern explaining that my dog hadn't eaten. I was told she is being monitored. We hung up and I waited another 4 and a half hours before I physically went to Newton Vet Hospital to pick up my dog. Turns out she never even had the ultrasound because the company hadn't shown up yet. I asked the staff to give me my dog and medical records.

When we got home my dog ran to her water bowl and drank almost her entire bowl of water! She never does this so I know she wasn't given any water while she waited for 8 hours. Again, this is a dog with bladder stone issues who hadn't been hydrated all day! These people should not be in the business of humane pet care.

Took my dog there for an emergency c section. Last time they were wonderful. This time we had a Dr Colyer who attempted to extort almost twice the price from us! That's right she doubled the estimate and refused to treat the dog unless we paid for both an X-ray and an ultrasound as well even though the dog had an ultrasound only hours earlier!

She then tried to say this was to verify the pups were alive when u could feel them kicking! I told her dead or alive they need to come out therefore there is no medical reason to do either an X-ray or an ultrasound and her response was that she needed to know how many? Really? WS she afraid she would miss one? I told her the ultrasound said 5! This still wasn't good enough.

She said she might have to call in "back up" because last time my girl had 6 puppies! Just wow! Never in 15 years have I had such a terrible experience! Do not go here unless You want to waste your money!

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. The receptionists at the front all act like it is a bother that you are there at their facility. They are so rude and cold. The vet, Jen Wyman, hardly looked at my pup. He was suffering from allergies and an ear infection. She spent all of 20 seconds trying to look in his ear and when she couldn't, she said "it's probably an ear infection" and prescribed him medicine for it.

She also called him "kid" at least 6 times in the two minute visit and that irked me. On the checkout, I was shocked to hear that the visit cost $180 and that they charged for an ear swap that never happened. I asked the receptionist and she said "I don't know but Dr Wyman is busy". I was irritated and left but DO NOT GO HERE! They are terrible!

Fast forward three days and my pup's infection got worse. Brought him to his regular vet and they said he had so much gunk in his ears from the infection that the drops weren't going in. So $180 and two hours down the drain. Don't waste your time. Wyman needs to reevaluate her profession!

I have had my dog, Becca, examined by a number of Dr.s at the hospital. My experience has always been very pleasant. Everyone who works there seem happy to be there. I value there opinions and they listen carefully to your concerns. I would recommend Newton Veterinary Hospital to anyone looking for a vet for their pet.

We cant thank everyone here enough, we had a diagnosis within minutes of getting our chase boy through the door and 24 hrs later he was basically back to his normal self, For an emergency visit over the weekend while most places are closed we expected it to be expensive but I cant say I've ever walked out of a vet/hospital and paid less than the initial estimate.

They really care about the animals and not just the money. Its definitely not the closest place to me but they've earned a customer for life. Thanks guys! (Added a photo of our little guy on the ride home)

I really like this place. On the rare occasion I would have to bring a dog in my care, they have been accommodating & professional. I recently brought a dog who showed major aggression during vet visits. Their professionalism, willingness to work with myself, the training & the dog sets this hospital, plus their staff apart.

I am convinced that they killed my dog. I brought her in for an issue with vertigo. They immediately without evaluating her told me that she should stay there a few days for evaluation. Dr. Brasch was the vet signed to her. I told them that I did not want him to treat my dog, as I had several bad experiences with him in the past. They assured me that when another vet came in they would take care of my dog.

I got a chance to see her before leaving and she seemed fine. I agreed to leave her there until the evening to see if she got better. I then get a call hours later from Dr. Brasch (Who I specifically asked not to hear from) who told me that she was fine. Brasch then casually mentioned that he had to tranquilize her multiple times, because she was having panic attacks, because "that's what pugs do." I was in a state of disbelief as that could not be further from the case.

I went over to pick her up, and they gave her to me in a state of shock with blood coming out of her nose. They then asked me if I wanted to leave her overnight. They rushed her to the back and she died. I am still heartbroken and devastated over this. I should have taken her elsewhere due to the previous bad experiences that I had there. Please consider going elsewhere.

This past weekend, my husband and I had to endure the heartbreak of putting our 15 year old Corgi/Malamute down. He originally belonged to my in-laws, but lived with us for the past 18 months. Newton Veterinary Hospital made this unfortunate experience a lot easier than expected. Everyone was incredibly kind, compassionate, and accommodating. Due to the circumstances and the place being a 24-hour operation, we didn't have to make an appointment.

We called from the parking lot and they took us within a few minutes. They offered a stretcher, but my husband was able to carry our dog (his back legs went). We were offered water and coffee right away, which we didn't take, but it was appreciated. The staff and vet gave us as much time as we needed with our boy before and after the euthanasia. Also, a lot (if not most) emergency appointments at other places charge hundreds of $$ just to walk the in the door. I won't put the exact amount in case their prices change, but they were surprising inexpensive.

I can't even begin to tell you how grateful I am to have brought my dog here! Not only were they attentive on the phone, answering all the questions I had about my emergency situation, but they worked to get me on their schedule as soon as possible. Dr. Kim gave extra special care to my sweet boy and the staff made him feel comfortable and relaxed during a stressful time.

I'm beyond grateful for their honest recommendations instead of trying to take every last cent I own like my past vet. My boy is now resting comfortably at home enjoying all the cuddles and treats he can get. 20/10 recommend this hospital no matter how far the drive is - their care is exceptional!

We just moved to Newton in April. Our Dog came in for a checkup, and then a couple of days later our dog ate a grape that someone in our apartment complex left outside while we were going for a walk. My boyfriend called the vet and they were able to get him into the office for an emergency appointment ASAP. The vets, vet techs, vet assistants, and staff were very friendly and understanding.

Had to make an emergency visit for our black lab Leo. Our vet did not have an opening so they recommended Newton animal hospital. Very happy with the service! A lot of reviews complain about the wait time for emergencies. It was a long wait before we were admitted into a room, but someone came out and evaluated Leo 15 min after check in. In Our case it was just a severe ear infection causing him to be disoriented.

But at initial evaluation after checking in they made sure it wasn't something more serious, like a seizure or stroke. if it was something that serious I'm sure they would have taken him right in. Very happy with the service! Very clean and the vets and assistants are very caring and compassionate! Thank you Newton Animal Hospital! Our Boy Leo thanks you as well!

$5k+ total for an unsuccessful stomach obstruction surgery. They messed up my puppy's throat while performing the surgery and they won't take responsibility for it. They said there was "a wire" found in his throat, and they said they couldn't upload the xrays after his surgery, which is BS because it just takes a click of a button. They obviously didn't want us to see the Xrays.

We did however see the xrays of what was removed from our puppy and there was no wire pictured at all. When we brought him home and had him examined by our regular Vet, the vet said the outside of his throat was so raw and red he couldn't even touch it. Plus our puppy had blood dripping out of his mouth when we brought him home. Our regular Vet did an xray of his throat and pointed out the abnormality in his throat after the surgery.

This place is sloppy, dishonest and unprofessional. Take some time to read the employee's reviews on the web, this will explain a lot on how this animal hospital treats their pet patients. It's been over a month and our puppy is still sick and still can't eat solid food. Honestly I don't know how the people at Newton Animal Hospital sleep at night. This place should be shut down.

They call themselves an emergency hospital! What a joke! Ever time you try to bring your pet there they tell you we have no room and to go somewhere else! This place should be closed down! They have no right to be called a veterinary hospital.

Do not take your pets here! I called them and told them what was going on with my two sick dogs. They told me to come but to wait in the car because they could have kennel cough. I waited for 6 hours! My dogs are throwing up all over the place waiting for 6 hours in the heat. I do not recommend this place to anyone and I want to make it known to as many people as I can not to go here. Do not recommend. Left my number for a manager to call the next day for this inexcusable wait and never received a phone call. I'm not happy!

My cat is very sick and they practically just kept my cat there just to rack up the bill. They did absolutely nothing to help my cat and every time we called them for an update on how the cat was doing, there was a different answer. To be a vet, you actually have to care about animals instead of the money. If this yelp review doesn't do justice, not sure what will.

Should be zero stars and closed down. Took my 12 year old who was unable to walk and was having difficulty breathing. Arrived at 2PM and I was told I had 3 others in front of me. 2.5 hrs later I was told to leave my girl in a cage and that the vet would call me. 9PM my dog was still in cage. Lobby was empty and I was told she was not yet cared for.

Obviously the triage process lacks any sort of care, honor or professionalism. I was forced to carry my girl to my vehicle where she urinated on herself. When she arrived home she immediately drank two bowls of water. Obviously thirsty from hours of confinement. The most horrible part is how insensitive the front desk was. Lacked any compassion or professionalism and was antagonistic. PLEASE do not take your loved one to this facility.

Took dog there on a Sunday waited 3 hours. They were not up front on the costs. Was told it would cost 650 for the tests but they charged 1200. They don't care about the animals. They just want to make money. Dog was fine and did not need the excessive treatment They did.

I was hesitant to take my puppy here after reading the reviews but decided to do so since not many places are open on a Sunday. My 7 month old puppy was not eating or drinking, wouldn't play and was seemingly lethargic. He was urinating all over the house which he NEVER does and his stool was BLACK. After my instincts and a quick google search told me this was cause for concern, I called Newton veterinary hospital and told them I was on my way; I let them know all of his symptoms and they confirmed this was definitely cause for concern and to come right in.

I arrived a half hour after the phone call and checked in. There were several people in the waiting area but it seemed to be moving so I sat and waited patiently. After being there for over an hour, another person who was waiting approached the reception desk and asked when she would be seen because she had been waiting for over 3 hours; they told her the wait for the vet tech was another 2 hours and likely another 2 after that for the vet since there was only one on staff.

After hearing this, I asked how long it would be before my puppy was seen and was told a minimum of 6 hours! At this point I informed them that I would not be waiting and they told me that because of his symptoms, they didn't advise that I left. If you feel his symptoms are that much of a cause for concern, why make me wait over 6 hours to be seen?

I left and took him to Rockaway Animal Hospital where they verified his symptoms were concerning, he was seen right away and within 2 hours I was told he ingested something foreign and was hemorrhaging. This is something that needs to be treated right away. He is now staying overnight, on an IV and will possibly need emergency surgery if he does not pass the foreign object on his own.

Save yourself the trouble and avoid this place at all costs; who knows what could've happened if I had waited over 6 hours to be seen by people who clearly didn't care what symptoms my puppy was exhibiting. The reviews speak for themselves - clearly I'm not the only one.

Brought my cat In today because she had not eaten at drank anything or moved off the couch for 2 days. Was told when I got there that the wait to be seen would be 4 to 6 hrs. Mind you there was only one other person in the waiting room waiting to be seen. I was like you are emergency animal hospital and there is one person in waiting, why so long?

They were like oh because we have a lot of drop offs and because it is the weekend. They were like well you can go home and call us back later if she gets any worse. I said well the whole point is to get the problem taken care of now before it gets worse.

Took my 9 month old rabbit Ziggy to be neutered. Of course, we were skeptic and nervous how the procedure would go, and the risks. Dr. Bladek, ( i believe) who was doing the procedure took the time to call us, and discuss with us from start to finish how it would go. He spent a good 15 minutes discussing and answering our questions. Also the staff and vet techs are always very friendly. For such a large operation, I got a small feel. Also, emergency services are not overpriced and fair. Our dog has needed them for eating things he shouldn't have LOL

My sons dog got hurt and I rushed him to Newton because they where the only vet hospital open during a snow storm a few days ago. He had scratches on his shoulder and back and had a small bleeding cut on his ear. He had been in a fight with another animal. My wife and I had cleaned his shoulder and back several time and the blood just kept coming.

So I drove him 40 away to Newton vet. The girls at the front desk were very sweet and helpful but I was not my impressed with the veterinary care. Yes they took care of the dog and bandages his ear after giving me a choice to either bandage it or pay for a $1000 to make the cut big enough to stitch up. Plus is was told there are no scratches on his shoulder and back.

Guess I didn't see what we saw. Here's a surprise I told them to bandage his ear! Not sure why but the vet never came out to talk to me. The veterinary assistant did. I was NOT happy about that. I had never taking a pet here before but I delivered packages to this play for 13 years before I retired. They were never very friendly and I had to deliver to the back of the building and then walk all over looking for someone to sign for the stuff.

When I would find someone they always acted like I was bothering them. Sadly it seems like nothing has changed. I wouldn't bring another pet here even if I had no place else to go!

I brought my dog here after he vomited many times. Long story short, he did not get the care he needed after being there for 20 hours (and almost $1400). He never got blood work! Meanwhile, his kidneys were failing and they had no idea. We brought him home and he rapidly declined. The next day, less than 24 hours later, he had to be euthanized. I'm not saying they could have saved him, but if they actually did the right tests, they could have saved him suffering he did not deserve to endure. Do not go here. Crown Vet is Lebanon is worth the trip for emergent pet care.

Dr. Bladek is the best. He just spayed our male poodle (Bailey) and he didn't have a single problem. Bailey didn't require any pain meds and recovery has been amazingly easy (except for the cone). We have been going to Newton Vet since 1977 and I am always happy with their staff and the doctors. Would definitely recommend. Polly McDonald

Never had any issues here. Everyone I have dealt with has been professional. I don't feel they over medicate or are particularly expensive compared to many other hospitals. My dog has been there for spay, shots lyme disease I have been a pet parent of 6 dogs 3cats and a kennel mgr / trainer of over 1500 dogs in animal welfare. I had dog insurance in past and find it useful for older dogs.

They accept it here. With covid you do everything from the car, and the phone. With diagnoses and payment via phone. It may take time but safety first. Unless it's emergency, you may have to be patient. So thanks Newton from Maya and me.

Please do yourself and your dog a favor and don't bring them here. By the time this place sees you for your emergency you could have been at a better hospital. I brought my dog for an emergency. It took hours before anyone actually saw the dog. Thank god my dog wasn't in critical condition. Because if he was he wouldn't have made it.

They pushed so many tests and even wanted him to stay overnight when the Dr said he had nothing critically wrong. If you were that concerned you would have checked on him hours ago. Even the techs were so unfriendly. The one who came out was scared of my dog. He's a puppy so he jumps but is the farthest thing from aggressive. No one calls to give updates you have to chase them down. Very frustrating and my dog deserves better care.

I've been in hold for over 20 minutes sitting in my car waiting for my dog. At 9 minutes my wife calls and gets right through. 37 minutes in still on hold. Still no dogs btw. Just click over and tell your customer what the issue is! Don't wait for a YELP review to defend yourselves. It's simple customer service. That's seems to be your major complaint.

Customer Service. Edit. Hour later I'm still here waiting for my dogs BTW. Not one person has told us what's going on. Emergencies? Who knows no one is telling us. Edit part two: we have our dogs. No food. No food bin. They lost it. We buying food now and a new bin. Ugh. Never ends. Read the other reviews. Thanks!
