The staff here are the best of the best! I consider myself lucky to work along side my wonderful husband, Dr. Jeff Jenkins and share in his passion for exotics. A norwich terrier, two chihuahuas, a rat terrier, an english bulldog, three cats, a yellow naped amazon parrot, two myers parrots, a green cheeked conure, a parrotlett, a sinaloan milksnake, a hamster, five chickens, and fivedesert tortoises. When not working I enjoy spending time with my children. My son Christopher has graduated high school and is now working at the practice.
I then went on to Mesa College to complete the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) program. Upon graduation in 1991, I began work at the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital and have been the evening receptionist ever since. What I enjoy most about working here is watching the clients come in, not knowing much about their unique pets.
As the Senior Laboratory Technician, I am responsible for the entire in-house laboratory testing including hematology, microbiology and parasitology. I also oversee the comings and goings of diagnostic tests performed outside of the Hospital at reference laboratories. My position is very unique, as most veterinary clinics send all of their tests to outside reference labs.
My name is Dayna and I have been a part of the AEAH family since March of 2009. I am a San Diego native; although I moved around a bit, I landed back here in the sunny city. I am currently attending Grossmont College working towards a BA in Biology/Ecology with dreams of working towards elephant conservation.

I can NOT rave about this place enough. We have been going to them for 14 years and they have never not taken good care of our bunnies. Today they went above and beyond. Dr Jenkins knew how much my daughter’s bunny meant to her and did everything to save her life. She’s now home happy as can be.

I had to take my chicken to vet. she was egg bound which could have been fixed but also had free bloody fluid in her abdomen. Problem in reproductive system. After talking to vet I decided on euthanasia now. Dr Gillet very knowledgeable and kind. I had never been there before but she and staff made me and Ruby comfortable. Not close to me but I would go back if I got another chicken. Cost was reasonable for emergency visit. I would highly recommend. Dr. Gillet made a sad thing to do a little better.

I took my guinea pig here for an emergency appointment, and I highly recommend! My guinea pig had a nasty respiratory infection, so I really needed her to be checked out and fast. I wasn't even there for an hour, and I got everything I needed. The staff was very gently and professional handling my guinea pig, and she honestly looked relaxed. Very cost friendly, too.

If I could give negative 10 stars to this veterinarian, I would. My mom and I made an appointment for my hamster that was experiencing skin issues. Upon examination of my hamster, she nipped his finger (as any hamster would a stranger) and the Veterinarian DR. Jenkins threw her up all the way to the ceiling and she fell back down and hit the concrete.
My hamster passed out and was BLEEDING from her mouth. When my mom confronted the vet all he said was, "she's just a hamster, it happens She might have broken some teeth." He had no care no remorse nor did he apologize for what he did. He had an attitude problem and brushed it off like it was whatever. I stormed into the room because my mom was upset, and when I asked if my hamster was okay and he proceeded to say "oh yea she flew in the air *insert chuckle* and fell all way down to the ground *insert chuckle*" he thought it was funny.
I then asked him if he had not been used to animals nipping being a vet for small exotic animals. He condescendingly responded "yup, 38 years." Well it sure seemed like he's only had one day one the job. I will NEVER return. I will post this review on every platform to warn everyone and report him to the board of veterinarians along with all the other bad reviews on here.
If you want a better, more empathetic, and quality Doctor, go to Amazon Animal Clinic in Chula Vista for exotic animals OR Dr Cecil at Pet Emergency in La Mesa, at the very least, your pet won't be abused there. Don't waste your time with this scumbag and embarrassment of a doctor who doesn't care about your animal. My hamster left terrified, traumatized, and injured. If you have had a bad experience her, post it and report it, don't be silent for the sake of your pet and others pets.

This is the worst place to board your bunnies. If I can give a ZERO I will give it. We had our bunny examined by Dr Gillett back in Oct 2021 and we asked if she checked on our bunny's ears for any mites or disease assuming its part of the general exam she said yes but me and my wife didn't see that she did. Then on Nov 2021 we had to board our bunny for 10 days and Bailey A. and Shelly M. were the front desk receptionist and are so unempathetic, inpatient and unprofessional on handling our concerns for our bunny.
It was our first time and will definitely be the last. The staff got upset when we inquired on the basic questions about how our bunny was doing. They have uncaring and unprofessional practice especially to us first time boarding bunny parents. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

I tried to post a full 3 page review of my experience with this location, but I had to keep under 5k characters. I feel swindled. Bamboozled. Played like a banjo. My rat boy, approx. 2- 2.5yrs old unfortunately grew a tumor from the left side of his mammary. ABC Vet referred me Avian due to their specialty in rodents. Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins seen my boy, said surgery is $550(he didn't recommend, due to his age.
I'll give him that) OR can shave his body, give him a $70 cream to put on daily which has sulfur & silver that aids in wound healing. This doctor had a great upbeat personality, kinda funny but a little too sarcastic for a medical setting. Decides NOT give my pet the full medical care for a good healing, by claiming they ran out of ecollars, KNOWING he will chew his open wound on his mammary tumor.
He even said "the cream won't bother his little belly". Offered me a personal visual with DIY bullet points on how to make a cloth ecollar, that he didn't want to give or sell since, it was their "Last one." He didn't feel his tech who ONLY makes $35 an hour should be put to "peasant" work & suggests I make it myself after paying $130. Nine days later, his wound is worse than what it was 9 days ago.
I called to ask for an ecollar, that should of been given at the appointment. I offered to pay for it multiple times & was shot down by Shelly who said I need to pay $63 for him to reexamined, they will not give an ecollar due to medical negligence, even though one should of been given at the appointment to avoid my rat chewing and biting on his wound even more but that wasn't done.
Which is actual medical negligence. Shelly went back & fourth with me & my mom. Shelly was rude, condescending, lacks empathy & compassion. Bailey called with her cute little attitude, saying the bill would be $213. In the next call, Bailey broke down the fees a little more with a lot more attitude, Bailey didn't talk over, nor talk down, I'll give her that. Resolution: None.
They made it very clear the only way I was going to get that ecollar, from them, was to spend another couple hundred dollars. But its okay, we all get our karma back some way. Thank God for Amazon Market Place and Prime shipping. I found cute little collars for rodents for less than $10. I'll post an update picture when it comes, so anyone else they try to swindle and bamboozle for more money can save their energy and stress. I will not recommend this place. I will not come back. Hopefully your experience will be much better than mines was and I truly mean that.

I came to see Dr. Gillet several months ago for help with my two chickens who were ill. Dr. Gillet took the time to explain to me what was going on with my chickens, why they were ill, and what my options were. She is kind, knowledgable, and compassionate. I was extremely happy with the care provided and would absolutely recommend Dr. Gillet to anyone who needs help with their pets.

Had two different experiences with this place, the first one being good with pretty good service/ minor wait time with my bearded dragon. The second experience with a Leopard Tortoise was unacceptable. Long wait time even after having an appointment and then was given the wrong medicine for the illness. Used the medication and ended up having to get a second refill after tortoise condition was improving, second refill dose nearly killed him after 3 shots due to a mistake on their part. Avoid this vet, find another vet if possible and get second opinions. Took the tortoise to another vet which we should have done in the first place.

Come for Dr Jenkins, stay for Dr Gillet. (That's not a slight to Dr Jenkins, just a testament to Dr Gillet.) A few years ago when I had concerns about my much-loved geriatric cockatiel, Grayson, showing some balding/feather loss, I brought him in to A&E to see Dr Jenkins because of Jenkins's bird care pedigree. After blood work came back normal (Yay!), we decided at that point there was not cause for concern. (What old mad doesn't bald a little bit, right?) About 9 months later, when Grayson started dropping weight, I brought him in again and the only available appt was with Dr Gillet.
I was impressed with her knowledge and expertise, and her compassion and understanding. From then on, every time I had any concern over Grayson's health, to Dr Gillet we went. (Our visits were becoming more frequent as Grayson was essentially on hospice care because of the slow progression of heart disease/failure due to his advanced age.) Sadly, this week I had to say goodbye to Grayson.
He was 25 years (and 4 months) old, so you can imagine how heart-wrenching this was. Dr Gillet's compassion, patience, and understanding helped so much. During this craziness of covid-19, and the particularly busy day at A&E (lots of emergency patients), I felt that Grayson was still a valued patient, and my feelings were respected and accommodated for.
I was able to have considerable time with Grayson, privately in the exam room, before letting the staff know I was ready. Then the entire euthanasia procedure was performed in the exam room (at my request) so I could be with Grayson 'til the end. I appreciate that at each visit, Dr Gillet was always direct and honest but also kind and friendly. The diagnostic and treatment options were clearly communicated so that I was able to make educated decisions for Grayson's care.
Without the guidance of Dr Gillet, my days with Grayson would have been fewer, for sure. I felt that Grayson continued to have a good quality of life because of the care and treatment advised by Dr Gillet.

Took my guinea pig in and was able to get a same-day emergency appointment because of some breathing issues he was having. Staff was kind, professional, and helped my piggie get the care that he needs. Didn't break the bank either (entire visit was under $200), which I am incredibly grateful for! Overall a very good experience and I'm grateful there's a good vet clinic for guinea pigs near me. :)

I am so happy I decided to take my pet bird here for the first time. Dr. Jenkins gave my bird some medication for her to take and I am so happy of the results along with being educated on what was actually going on with my bird. It is already the second day of me giving her the medication and she already looks like she is becoming herself again. She has finally started to eat on her own again and has gained more energy again. I will be coming to this vet for now on. Thank you so much for your help! I will be making a check up for my pet bird!

Dr. Jenkins is a intelligent and dynamic and compassionate person. He is the only good Avian certified veterinarian in San Diego! He has such broad knowledge and many years experience to help all animals. He puts the animal's best interest first, as well as being affordable. You can feel confident in his excellent expertise in helping your animals! I always enjoy our conversations. He has helped my rat, my toad and my doves over the years. I highly recommend him- he is the best!

Dr. Jenkins and his staff are wonderful. I was a "newbie" in rabbit ownership when I found Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital. I had previously used another vet who charged me a lot of money for a wellness check and then outlined all things that were wrong with my rabbit followed by a cost estimate of what it would cost to "fix" my rabbit. I found Dr. Jenkins based on a referral from a friend after my bunny got injured.
My original doctor said he could see me in 3 days.even though I said the rabbit was injured and in pain! Dr. Jenkin's staff fit me that day. Dr. Jenkins was wonderful. He explained everything he was doing, he gave me price estimates up front, he offered alternatives and even told me when something was unnecessary. Being the hysterical "new bunny Mom" I was ready to mortgage the house.
In the the end the cost was way below what I expected. My bunny recovered without issues and Dr. Jenkins and his staff were incredibly patient and kind to me. Also, when I shared with Dr. Jenkins what the other vet said was wrong with my bunny and how to "fix" her, he explained to me how what the other vet proposed was going to cause more issues and that the original issue was in fact not an issue!
