Finding the right veterinarian is something that takes careful consideration. There are a lot of choices and the choice that pet parents make will be based on the specific needs of them and their pets. Some pets may start out with a relatively uneventful life needing routine care such as regular wellness visits, vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery.
Burke Animal Clinic has been providing comprehensive and progressive veterinary care in Northern Virginia since 1979. We practice integrative medicine by offering traditional veterinary services alongside alternative therapies. Our alternative therapies are complementary to traditional medicine, providing us more resources to help keep your pet healthy and to treat chronic conditions and provide drug-free alternatives to pain management.
At Burke Animal Clinic, we offer a range of traditional and holistic therapies for pets of the community. Our holistic treatments can help keep your pet healthy in safe, non-invasive ways. We also recognize the importance of traditional treatments, which is why we offer standard medical services like dental cleanings, surgeries and more.
Just like people, pets have changing needs as they age. Our doctors and staff will work with you to identify your pet's needs at every age. For general wellness, we recommend an annual exam, annual intestinal parasite testing, updated vaccinations, monthly flea/tick prevention, and monthly heartworm prevention and annual heartworm testing for dogs.

Today was my first visit with Dr. Gina Blevins and she was wonderful. She was thorough, answered all my questions, and made me feel supported and informed as a relatively green dog owner with two dogs, including a new rescue. I'm happy to have found someone I look forward to bringing my pets back to. Staff was friendly and helpful on the phone, as well.

Our dog hurt her paw and was in pain and our vet was all booked up. We couldn't get my dog in for another 2 days. Holiday weekend. Understandable. We called Burke Animal Clinic. They took our dog in early on a Sat. morning when we were defeated trying to get our dog care. The staff was amazing and treated us with kindness and compassion. Dr. Gordon is Fantastic!
Our dog is feeling so much better, and we were all able to sleep well last night. Thank you, Burke Animal Clinic. We're forever grateful! We'll be back! You all are top notch.

Took my dog Mochi for the first time there and we love it. From the time I called trying to get an appointment till the time they checked us out I felt so welcome. The staffs were all attentive to my nervous dog who happened to have an open wound on her belly. Dr. Gordon gave me a thorough explanation and answers patiently to all this Momma worried questions. Definitely give them a 5 stars :.

The Burke Animal Clinic is A++, tip of the spear! We had such a great experience with the friendly staff and the professionalism of Dr. Bakansas when we brought our darling boy in for an emergency exam. We will definitely change our vet needs to this practice. Thank you friends at Burke Animal Clinic, you made a believer out of us.

We have been going to Burke Animal Clinic for a year and really appreciated the friendly and timely service during pandemic. However, when we tried to make the appointment with the front desk for annual pet check today, the lady was very disdainful and kept interrupting and sighing whenever I spoke. I was just asking about the doctor's availability.
I don't know why the service changed so much but I don't feel comfortable taking my dog there now, knowing that they might not treat her with patience also. Really appreciated doctor Coleman's work during pandemic! Hopefully the front desk service can be nicer for other patients.

Oh my word! As if I need yet another reason to love Burke animal clinic. Today I received a card in the mail offering condolences and sympathy for the recent loss of our guinea pig, Bella. For a moment I had no idea how they even *knew* because I ended up taking her to the local exotic vet for the euthanasia THATS NOT ALL! This card, you guys is SO THOUGHTFUL!
They went the extra mile to cut out a photo of our guinea pig that they had in their records and put it in the bottom corner of the front of this card. My bucket is full and I can't recommend them enough. I have LOVED this practice for years. I give them 10 out of 5 stars, always.

Burke Animal Clinic's service with respect to the vet and the care they have provided has been excellent. The vet himself handled our dog with great care, was very kind, and was informative regarding the health of our dog. On the other hand, the customer service provided by their receptionists has been horrible. We called to schedule a follow-up appointment for our dog, and a receptionist by the name of Katherine (excuse me if misspelled) answered the phone.
The entire phone call she was extremely condescending and dismissive of our complaints and requests. This was especially shocking since we made inquires and requests with nothing but kindness. If it wasn't for this experience with their receptionist, the review would have been 5 stars due to the excellent care they provided. Instead, we are giving them 2 stars.

Burke Animal Clinic immediately responded to my request for a first-time appointment with genuine concern for the well-being of my cat. After speaking with the doctor- and without my asking- they were able to fit me in at 9am the very next day. Incredible. I was able to meet my veterinarian in person after he asked to come out to my car to gain more information and to personally discuss his examination.
The vibe was warm from beginning to end and for that I am very grateful. The friendly staff at Burke Animal Clinic reacted to my needs with genuine concern and open ears. Highly recommended.

I have been trying to figure out why my French bulldog has been costing me hundreds of dollars in vet visits a month due to ear infections. I was going to VCA hospitals. I changed on a Sunday to Burke animal clinic and I will never go anywhere else again. The vet at BAC genuinely cared about my dog advising me that he think it may be a food allergy causing these reactions. VCA would have continued taking my money each month so I am extremely great full for Burke animal clinic. Since I've changed his diet as the vet here advised, he has been completely fine with no infections.

I brought my little guy in yesterday for a puppy physical and vaccines. In the time of Covid, someone immediately came out to pick up my puppy and I waited in the car. Dr. Colvin was great! Within 10 minutes I had an update. He told me what he recommended for puppies but didn't try to push any unnecessary procedures. For a puppy visit, he recommended the 2nd round of vaccines, deworming, and a fecal test.
He also performed a physical to ensure that my puppy was healthy. The prices were more than reasonable for this being my puppy's first vet visit with me. The vet techs were super friendly and amazing, my puppy felt very calm and was returned to me very happy and relaxed. 24 hours later. We experienced no negative side effects from any vaccines and they even sent him home with a little treat, which he loves. This will be my go to vet!

I have seen a few of the vets and I haven’t had a bad experience. Dr Johnson is my go to but would not hesitate to see another Dr. The front staff and the vet techs are great and always compassionate.
Perfect? No, but close. Mistakes? Sure, but nothing worth mentioning. If you are looking for a new vet, just try them out. And tell them D’Argo sent you!!!

Good afternoon. This review is on Burke Animal Clinic. I have been coming here for a good amount of time and have had a couple of issues but today I felt I had to write a review. My appointment today was at 11:00 am. I arrived at 10:50 am. I called and notified Ms. Cathy that I was in front of the building in the disabled parking. She took my information.
Due to the parking lot being so small there is never any parking and I have been told to park in the disabled parking spot. Once a regular parking spot was available I relocated. I spent a total of 30 minutes in the parking lot and no one came able to assist me. I feel this is very unprofessional. People who came after me were attended. I wonder why that would be.
I decided to leave and was contacted by Burke Animal Clinic at 11:30. I really think that if you cannot provide a service you should not be making appointments. Also, it is obvious you have a parking problem. So I either limit your employees or the patients. Lastly, please provide a certain level of professionalism in being considerate of someone's time.
I am a professor and had a hour and half to spare because I was in between courses. Due to your carelessness my time was taken up. I will not be coming back here and I advise others to do the same. Dr. Abe Vasquez

I am so grateful for Burke Animal Clinic! My dog wasn't feeling well so first thing this morning I called our regular vet. They couldn't see her until next Monday (today is Wednesday!) I called around looking for a vet that could see my dog for a same-day sick appointment and Burke Animal Clinic booked her in for the same afternoon. They were so professional, caring, and accommodating.
The vet asked lots of good questions, understood my concerns and empathized, and didn't talk down to me. I felt like a true partner in my dog's healthcare. We wound up with a course of antibiotics for an infection and I feel confident that my dog will recover without incident. Before the end of the visit, the vet encouraged me to follow-up to let them know how my dog is doing, and of course told me to call immediately if her condition worsens or I have additional concerns or questions.
I will probably be switching to Burke Animal Clinic permanently because of the great quality of care, their willingness to see a new patient on the same day, and their concern for my pet's health.

The staff here is wonderful! They have been great with both my 65 lb American Staffordshire Mix and my 29 lb Beagle mix. Dr. Johnson is competent, friendly, and takes time to explain options and answer questions during your exam. She seems to know more about how to treat allergies than any other vet I’ve met. The receptionists are awesome. Catharine, Casey, and Emily have been great to speak to whenever I call with questions!
The techs have all been caring as well; they even came outside recently to teach me how to administer a shot for my dog. They are practicing social distancing well. Highly recommend them if you are looking for a thorough and gentle place to take your pets!

I am new to the area and was looking for a new vet for my pup. After Setting up the appointment and talking with the receptionist, I thought that this vet seemed like it could be a good fit. My pup had a skin issue that required some medica to on and treatment. When setting the appointment, I noted that I could only stay their for about an hour tops before o had to return to work.
I was told by the employee that this shouldn't be a problem at all and it should be "30 minutes tops from when you get here until you leave". I arrive for my appointment 5 minutes early because they had prefaced I would need to complete some paperwork. Someone came out and provided the paperwork and assured me someone would be with me in a couple minutes to get Wolfie.
After waiting 20 minutes and seeing multiple pets get taken in that arrived after I did, I called and was put on hold and eventually dropped from the line. I proceeded to call 2 more times with the same results. I finally get in touch with someone and they proceed to tell me that they are "backed up" and "behind schedule". yet the folks next to me clearly stated their appointment times were later than mine.
Instead of just owning up to their mistake and trying to be an accommodating service provider, the employees got extremely short and rude with me when I explained I had to leave to go back to work (at this point I had been sitting in the parking lot for nearly an hour) and proceeded to talk to me as if the delay in service was MY FAULT that they dropped the ball and messed up.
After finally getting my pup seen, they proceeded to tell me that since I was leaving that they would treat him later in the day even though I told them I needed him back ASAP as I needed to go somewhere else with the dog later that day. Even after they dropped the ball and I told them that I needed the dog by a certain time, they began talking to me as if they were doing Me a huge favor by "Still seeing him". terrible service and no accountability from the staff.
I guess there was a good reason that I could get an appointment here within a week when everywhere else in the area was booked out at least a month. I think that speaks for itself. Save yourself the stress by going elsewhere and get the proper service you and your pet deserve.

We have been super happy across the board. They open early and answer phones at 7:15 and schedule same day appointments. Front desk staff are kind at check-in and helpful. Their vet techs are truly amazing and kind. Really gentle and approach animals with ca They don't push services on you but ask - would you like an ear cleaning for your dog or prefer to do that on your own? Very happy!

We were extremely happy with the care our mastiff (with a chronic heart condition) received from the time we moved to the area until she passed away in October of 2017. We continued to take our lab here and when we brought a new puppy home, we brought him as well. You will pay some pretty hefty fees at this clinic - they wanted nearly $800 to have my lab puppy neutered (I found another clinic, paid for additional medication to prevent nausea, laser cutting to promote healing, etc. and it was $350).
We paid more than $950 to have a canine removed and they are asking for $2.2k to have 3 lipomas removed. They tend to recommend the gold level standard of care - which is fine if you have unlimited resources and want to pay for testing and procedures that can be avoided. I brought my 9.5 year old lab in due to obvious discomfort with her back leg.
After stepping on the scale and weighing in at nearly 10lbs lighter than 2 months before - the doc made the recommendation that we have X-rays and blood testing done because cancer was the first thing that came to mind. Of course I want to make sure my pup isn't suffering so I agree to this - ultimately she had to be sedated for the X-rays. Come to find out the scale is BROKEN and weighing light. $771 later my dog has some swelling and will be fine. Had the scale been accurate, I wouldn't have agreed to X-rays, I would have gone with anti inflammatory medication, rest and recheck in a week (as we have the other half a dozen times my dog has bruised/bumped her leg) and saved myself nearly $600 in X-rays, bloodwork, and anesthesia.
I called and the doc said I would make the same recommendation if the scale was accurate, no apology or offer to make it right. I'm ANGRY that my 9.5 year old dog was put under unnecessary anesthesia. They have lost me as a customer, and lost my recommendation as a great place to take pets.

We adopted our Lab/Shepard mix in May and were given a list of vets from the rescue agency. After doing some "homework", we decided on Burke Animal Clinic. I had a lot of questions on our pup's first visit due to us having small breed dogs (Pomeranians) up to this point. We were walking into an entirely new experience. Everybody was so patient with me and answered all my questions. We have been extremely happy with the care that they've given to our furbaby.

My 19 year old cat just had her yearly check up with Dr. Colvin at Burke Animal Clinic. He is always, caring, gentle and gives me options on solving an issue. He is concious of costs and provides up front estimate. With the help of staff and doctors my cat is enjoying her senior years. These caring folks have helped with major and minor illnesses over the years and are now giving my sweet girl the kind of pain free life all animals deserve. I trust their expertise and appreciate their compassionate manner.

The staff at Burke Animal Clinic have all been wonderful in getting my dog the best care. He is reactive and they always go out of their way to make sure he doesn't see a dog, without me even having to ask - they're always prepared before we even get there. Dr. Johnson has been taking wonderful care of him and helping us save money in the process.
Unlike our previous vet who placed billables above patient care, Dr. Johnson has gone out of her way to call me to check in on my dog (even after hours) and genuinely cares about him. We originally only came to BAC for my dog's reactive issues, but loved them so much that we now drive 45 min to bring our dog here for all of his veterinary needs. Highly recommend this clinic!

Last week, I took my two dogs in. My older dog, Zorro (42 pound Australian Cattle dog) needed a sedated nail trim (he's highly reactive). Dr. Colvin sedated him and while we waited, then did my 1-year old puppy exam on my dog Stella (9 pound dachshund). Because she is so small, he recommended breaking up the rabies and distemper vaccinations which I completely agree with (15 years ago my other puppy Lola, 12 pound dachshund, had a negative reaction to her 1-year vaccinations and threw up on the way home.) Dr. Colvin then trimmed Zorro's nails. I love the Vets (I've seen all of them!) and the staff at Burke! They are so friendly, they call and check in the next day and are so sweet to my dogs.

I rarely visit animal clinics owned by civilians, because our vet is with the military. However, I was unable to get an appointment and was really worried about our pup which landed us at Burke Animal Clinic. The positives: - The staff was very kind and supportive from the first phone call. - And our experience with Dr Clovin was brilliant. He was very thorough and listened to my concerns. - Since then, they have always been very great about returning phone calls and offering simple advice when necessary.
It was a great surprise to receive a "thank you" card in the mail. The negatives: - The nurses do not discriminate against giant dogs, but I did get a sense of unease from the male receptionist. We have a Great Dane puppy, who is generally well behaved but he's still a (100lb) puppy and gets excited when he meets other dogs. One incident, we were given the condescending "we have a room to make you more comfortable" comment after another person with their dog came in.
Our dog is big and loves to play, but we never let him rush to greet another person or play with other dogs except with expressive permission from the other owner. It really felt like we were being shooed into a room to make everyone else feel comfortable. I really felt like they could have encouraged other owners/made this into a teaching moment, especially to owners with small dogs to not view any dog over 20lbs as a threat to their safety and their animal's safety. - Nearly $100 visit fee is admittedly very steep too.
My specialist does not bill that much and he's treating a human. Due to the proximity, we will likely continue to visit but only as necessary. I don't think Burke Animal Clinic is likely to become are our regular vet.

Burke Animal clinic is by far the best clinic I have ever used. We started going to Burke a few years ago after our dog managed to tear both of his ALCs at the same time. Not wanting to do surgery, we were looking for alternative options. Without going into too many details, Dr. Herrity and Burke were able to use a cold laser procedure which completely healed my dog; the process was less expensive, less invasive, and extremely successful.
Since that time, we continued using Burke as our go-to clinic, despite living in Arlington. Each time we had an appointment, I'd ask myself why I was driving all the way out to Burke, when there are other clinics much closer. And each time on my way home from the clinic, I felt that the drive (and traffic) was worth it. The clinic staff was compassionate, knowledgeable, and accessible.
The vets were great and we really appreciated their general philosophy towards medicine - which prioritized quality of life, embraced alternative medicine where appropriate, and aimed to minimize complicated and costly interventions.
Unfortunately, we recently had to put our dog down after a short and challenging battle with cancer. Through the process, Burke staff was amazing.
They got us in for appointments when needed, followed up with "check in" phone calls, and even took the time to send us flowers and a card the day after we had to put our dog down. I simply couldn't have asked for more.

Dr. Johnson is extremely professional, and takes time to explain everything as well as answer all of your questions. You never feel rushed, and she treats your animal as if it were her own. She will call you at home and explain, in great detail, any problems or lab results. I love coming here and feel extremely confident that the prices are fair and that the doctors are knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. It's why I drive over 35 minutes from my home in Chantilly, because of all the vets that I've been to, this place has the most caring and professional doctors who treat you like family.

I have nothing but positive things to say about Burke Animal Clinic. I've been bringing my dog here since he was 3 months old (he is now almost 7) and I wouldn't think about taking him elsewhere. My favorite vets are Dr Herrity, Dr Colvin and Dr Ranivand. Every time I have brought my dog in, they make me feel as if we are their main focus and that they truly care about mine/his needs.
A few months ago, he tore a ligament in his knee and I thought that he would need surgery. To my surprise, BAC offers other treatment options and never tried to pressure me in one direction. I have been taking my dog for VOM and laser therapy and his knee has significantly improved & I'm very happy with the results. It's cost me way less $$ and recovery time than surgery would have. If you need a new vet, look into Burke Animal Clinic - you won't be disappointed!

Dr. Johnson and the staff at Burke Animal Clinic are fantastic. Dr. Johnson is such a sweet person and her love of animals is completely evident. She has given us great treatment and also plenty of advice on training and alternative products to try (that were less expensive options) for our dog. And she makes the visit as painless as possible for my two cats who hate to leave the house. :) The staff is very helpful & I am completely happy with my experience with the clinic.

The office manager, Liz, decided to respond to my review. No problem. Below is my reply to her response. Not only do I stand by all I have stated, I am surprised that she would deny that they allowed my pet to escape. particularly due to the injuries he sustained when he did, and the fact that their own staff member was injured too, ( a gash on her arm, and a broken watch) when she tried to catch him. Yes, his escape was an accident: The staff member asked to hold him and then couldn't control him when he tried to get loose.
The manager, (Liz herself was the one that just blew me off when I begged for an appointment) treating me so horribly when I really needed help, was NOT an accident, was completely avoidable, and is something I will never forget. ------------- My response to manager reply below.------------ Liz, be informed before commenting. Your staff member, ASKED to hold my cat while I was in the parking lot, and let him escape FROM HER ARMS!
He leaped to the asphalt, and ran across all four lanes of Lee Chapel Road! Consequently, he did damage to four of his nail beds on the front and back legs. Furthermore, he had to be treated for the bleeding that resulted from this. Not only did your staff member fall in the road that day, but Dr. Gosseline had to treat his nail beds, which he did not come in for, and give him a sedative.
With regard to your appointments, I resented being disregarded the day I called, and still do. You, as the office manager, displayed no care/ concern for my pet, or for me, (an anxious and worried cat owner). Apparently, Burke Animal Clinic picks and chooses who they will share their "best" service with. My cat and I didn't make that list. Fine. I know quite a few people that work in the veterinary industry, and I make sure that they are aware of my experiences here, and just how shabbily I was treated.
