Our Pet Hospital in New York City. What's our story? We're so glad you asked! St. Marks Veterinary Hospital has been a fixture in the East Village of NYC since 1986 when Dr. Sally Haddock first opened our doors. She and her husband conducted neighborhood research to determine whether the pet owners of our community needed a local veterinarian, and they sure did!
Your pet is an important part of your family, and when he or she is ill, you want the best medical care available. At St. Marks Veterinary Hospital, we provide pet wellness examinations for pets of all ages, specifically catered to their life stage and health care needs. We offer a variety of health maintenance services, including medicated baths and an in-house pharmacy.
In order to maintain our high standard of service, we require that payment be made at the time services are rendered. We provide estimates for all surgeries and hospitalizations. If you have not received an estimate, you are welcome to request one at any time for your expected charges. St. Marks Veterinary Hospital is happy to accept Cash, Major Credit Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), and CareCredit.
We are actively involved in our community, extending our love for animals and NYC even further beyond our own doorstep. We work with NYSAVE, providing emergency care to pet owners with financial need. We love our own pets so much that we want to do whatever we can to ensure all pets and their owners can have those wonderful, lifelong bonds.

This vet is out of the way as I live in Sunnyside, Queens. But let me tell you this vet hospital is absolutely worth the 35 minute commute across Manhattan. The doctors and the staff are genuine and kind. My 6 month pup went to get blood work done last Wednesday and got spayed today. Although both visits cost a decent amount, they never once spoke to me as if I was ignorant to the well-being of my dog(s), they never tried to upsell me, and they spoke to me with kindness and understanding.
I have worked in hospitality for years and have never seen such hospitality from a veterinary's clinic in my life. They helped me file my claim with the pet insurance agency. The doctor kept me up to date with phone calls and check ins the day of the surgery and was always transparent about procedures costs and totals. They're good to my pup and I'm considering taking our older pup here too.
Keep in mind our normal vet is.5 blocks away from our apartment but that guy always tries to upsell, isn't up to date with new health insurance, treatments and research. It always feels like uncertainty leaving their office but not at St. Martins Vet hospital! They are next level animal care and try their best to work with what you can afford to have your pup or and dog in the best health.
I wish every vet was like this. Excited to take my pup back in 2 weeks for her checkup. A special thanks to the admin staff and Dr. Kurtzman for being transparent, accommodating, reliable, but mostly, kind and patient. Truly one of the best vets I've ever been too with any animal.

I have been going to St. Marks Veterinary Hospital for over 30 years and have always been very pleased with the service I have received. So far I have had 4 dogs who have been taken care of at St. Marks Vet. All doctors have been very thorough in their exams and the doctors and staff have always been very caring and extremely helpful in times of need. I highly recommend their service!

Was a 15 yr customer here. If your pet needs dental work, (or frankly, any work that requires surgery and anesthesia), I would recommend taking them to Animal Medical Center or Blue Pearl where they have actual dentist to do the work and anesthesiologist who take the time to discuss your pets needs. Those places are much better equiped to deal with sensative and potential life threatening issues that can occur when your pet is over anhestisized or, better yet, attempt to make sure they DON'T over anesthetize your pet.
In fact, when this issue occurred at St Marks, they were not prepared to deal with it and told us to take our cat to Animal Medical Center. That really tells you everything you need to know when considering any surgery at St Marks. If you want more detail, here it is. Our 15 year old cat, Charlotte, had some dental work done at St. Marks. She already had elevated kidney numbers.
Somehow the vets there didn't think it was necessary to consider options to anesthesia to reduce the time she would be down (other places we went to after explained very clearly what the options were). This caused sever injury to her kidneys and nearly killed our cat. It also delayed treatement for a tumor she had because we couldn't address the issue for more than a year while we had to deal with her reactoin to being over anesthized at St Marks.
Because that delay in treating her tumor left us with few options for treatment, the window where we could have removed the tumor passed and left us with only radiation as an option. Thanks to Blue Pearl, Charlottes kidney issue has improved. However, the tumor we couldn't treat due to the damage her kidney received at St Marks is killing her. Do yourself a favor, take your beloved pet to an actual animal hospital. If you need to go to St Marks, make sure it's for the small things (checkups, shots). Anything more, they may not handle it well and will tell you to go to AMC anyhow.

One of the worst experience I have had. Would not recommend. You can't ask questions after a procedure. Never answer my email. You have the nerve to ask me to rate you. I have sent an email still no reply. You are only after the money. You claim that you were not able to get in contact with me! You were in contact with me up to the time it was to collect my money.
I paid in advance you were able to get me then. When it came time for you you to schedule well I can not be found. I can't with you people you didn't even call me to pick up my cat. You people are vet mill. Horrible experience. I am being kind.

My dog at times can be skittish around masked people. During a recent checkup/exam the St. Marks team brought her from the exam room into the back to get her updated vaccinations. We were informed that my dog was barking and skittish around the vet techs, who according to the vet, were all masked, standing over her trying to corral her. Anyone that knows dogs should understand that multiple people standing over a dog that is already uncomfortable will make the situation even worse.
We were then informed once she was eye level with the vet techs, there was no issue. Rather than acknowledging that the situation was approached terribly, they offered to give us sedatives for the next time we go to the vet. Needless to say, I'm done with St. Marks after 4 years. Thanks guys for finally making up my mind on this matter!

Came in with a young kitten who was found in the road and the vet charged us to tell us he was healthy and "clean his ears."They didn't offer to do a fecal test for worms and we had to ask (I have since leaned that it is standard to just give stray kittens a worm-killing drug when they are first brought in, but they wouldn't even offer to test him let alone give him any!).
The test came back negative but we found out later that the cat had two different types of worms. Immediately after we got home we found ticks on the cat as well though they said they checked him. They also told me over the phone an estimated age for the cat and then they emailed us a document with a different age. Very disappointing service, just another vet trying to rip you off. Update: I called them about finding two different species of worms from my cat, both of which they missed during the fecal test.
The receptionist told me that we would have to do ANOTHER fecal test before giving him any medication (fecal test is $90, medication is around $10) even though i had the physical worms and offered to bring those in. I took my cat to another vet, they gave him the medication before even asking for the worms. No tests needed. Never going back to St. Marks Veterinary and I hope you don't either. They just want to take as much money from you as possible.

I would not recommend this place at all. They do not return phone calls on a timely basis. It's takes them 3 days to send a fax verification to an online pharmacy. My pet was prescribed antibiotics for 14 days, they only give medication enough for 3-4 days at a time, forcing you to come back to purchase more medication. The Vet is more. interested in explaining to you the price of services and how you can pay for services vs the well being of your pet. If you are looking for a money hungry place, who doesn't return phone calls, and takes 3 days to send a fax, this is the place for you!

My wife and I have a Senegal Parrot who we had never taken to a vet before but since he starting having a smelly case of diarrhea we we're looking for places we could take him too. We live in the East village and all the Avian specific vets are either in the upper east or west sides of the city so we were a little hesitant at first but took the chance and we're happy we did.
We we're quite pleased with the care and responsiveness at St. Marks Vet. Doctor Barth examined our bird and thoroughly explained how we can move forward and gave us cost breakdowns as well. The nurse/assistant handled our otherwise sometimes hard-to-handle bird surprisingly comfortably. All the tests came clear and the doctor called herself to discuss options. Currently we're on an antibiotic dose, which seems to be helping.
